My engine is now stripped down, but we've not yet found any supplier for the camshafts. Their numbers are:
Left - 23502830 (casting 23502772),
Right - 23502834 (casting 23502774).
The left camshaft was destroyed when a follower jammed against it, and the right camshaft has noticeable wear on at least one lobe.
My mechanic is wondering if he could use camshafts from a higher-horsepower DDEC II engine instead - my engine is rated at 277 BHP. We assume that different injectors would be needed, and the turbo may need to be changed; the DDEC computer may also need to be reprogramed, maybe? I know that extra power means extra heat, but I'm going to be installing a second radiator on the opposite side anyway.
Is it a foolish idea to use different camshafts etc etc, or should we keep with the stock camshafts, even though they're very hard to find?
Thanks, John
PC Industries has 4- 23502830 used and 3- 23502834 used cams $610.00 ea and Diesel Dash will have new ones for about $1500.00 each, what's the last 2 numbers on your injectors ? the turbo is the same up to 350 hp www.dieselpartsdirect.com should have those rebuilt for 400 buck each

Thanks! I've given this info to my mechanic. I told him to try Valley Power in SoCal, but he said they sometimes buy 2-stroke parts from him!
(I'm surprised they couldn't help, because they still service the 12V149 quad-turbo generator sets where I used to work.) I also mentioned Stewart & Stevenson to him, but I don't know how many stationary DDEC engines are still used in the oilfields. Marine engines won't help us because they're always much higher horsepower with different camshafts. Complete Coach Works in Riverside CA doesn't have the camshafts either. He'll call Luke tomorrow.
Thanks again!
Kirby the owner of Diesel Dash owns Stewart and Stevenson plus United Engines they should have those rebuilt or new, that is a common cam for a DDEC 6V92,I bet you Delany and Ahif in Bakerfield CA will have those to,C&J bus repair in MN will have those ,1000's of MCI with DDEC engines still around they work on
OK, thanks! I'll give this to my mechanic. This is a big help. Thank you so much.
John

My dad an I used to buy a lot of parts from them. The owner once told dad "If we don't have it, it's only because my wife doesn't realize Detroit made it!" And more than once it was proven he was right.
Don Fairchild used to stop in there when visiting this area of the country and the "Old Man" tried to sell him the business lock stock and barrel. He's since passed on, but Don told me not too long ago that his grandson was carrying on in his grandfather's foot steps.

That guy had a shop full of the V drive engines both 92 and 71 series
Yes at one time Don said he had DDEC V drive set ups sitting everywhere that were take-outs some almost brand new, some rebuilt, some unknown. They were left over from some gov. grant repower program. (probably to upgrade to 4 strokes)

Yes Sir he was definitely OLD SCHOOL! Dad an I loved buying parts from him, but it got to where I'd have to send dad by himself (or mom tagged along) because if I went we spent ALL day there listening to his stories, and NOTHING got done in our shop for the whole day! LOL!
But yeah more than once he told dad
"Here take it, if it's what he needs send me a check, if not bring it back the next time yer this way!" First time we went over there we accidentally got in the wrong DD place right off the interstate across from the truckstop, when we called and told them where we were his wife hollered
"GET OUT OF THERE QUICK, they'll rob you off all your arms an legs!" LOL!
Too bad he's gone, but Don say's the grandson is OK to deal with too!
