Title: I need a MC9 mechanic! Want a FREE Vacation?
Post by: windyman55 on January 08, 2023, 04:49:09 AM
I'm starting to panic here. As I stated in my previous message. My wife's passing has me moving 1000 miles North in THREE weeks. And I still don't have a running coach. This thing is going to have to be my home until the house gets built in Illinois and I have to get it up there in one of the 4 gtrips I'm going to have to make.

Unless I can get this air situation fixed I will pay airfare and expenses to have some one VERY knowledgeable on the MC9 air system to come here and get this resolved. I'm Serious.

So. I think I have the air dryer fixed...SORT OF. But I've gone from one end of the spectrum from the other. Before it leaked so bad I couldn't build up any pressure. Got that fixed by removing the outlet and cleaning it up.

BUT NOW... It won't do the usual purge at 120lbs. It just keeps building up.
But here are the symptoms.

Despite the fact that I have let it build up to 135lb before panicking and pressing the break pedal Several times to lower it.

The gauge shows air.
But, No air getting to the rest of the coach.
Air bags.
Break release.
Wipers.
Even the engine shut off switch doesn't work. I have to go to the back of the engine and push the lever that cuts off the fuel in order to shut it down. regardless of what the pressure is.

Now, Ill verify this later this morning. But if memory serves me correctly when I added air directly to the small front tank in the enclosure below the drivers seat it was airing up the bags and wipers and engine cut off switch.

I could never get the pressure high enough before to see if it would release the breaks.

To sum it all up...I'm ready to pay someone that knows what they're doing to fix this since there's not a soul here in this town that wants to work on it. I don't have 8 hours a day to devote to this. I only have half of my household and Business inventory packed and that's taken me over a month since I'm alone. Nearly 70. And, wear a back brace for 3 bad vertebrae.

I neglected to add this. If it gets to the point of having to fly someone in
I HAVE ALL THE TOOLS YOU MIGHT NEED. Three tool cabinets full.
And I already have the front of the coach on blocks about 2 feet up.

I was correct. When airing up direct to the air tank in the compartment under the drivers seat:

The wipers work.
The back drivers side REAR wheels air up. But that's all.
I do have air now coming out of the item pictured. It appears to attach to the front air bags.

The breaks want to air up. But I discovered air coming out of the quick release valve in the spare wheel compartment. I disassembled it and found the Diaphragm in pieces and brittle.

BUT.. the main issue right now is getting air to the front of the bus.

Thanks
Greg

Air systems on buses air up stages, wet tank 1st, then main tank to the front tank, then to the auxiliary tanks,it sorta of crazy MCI'with the air Dryer behind the front axle

Pressure protection valve is suspect.

It is the valve that prevents air from going anywhere but the brake related tanks, until the set pressure is reached, then the air spills over the dam to fill the aux, which includes all your non-functional features.

PPV would be the next target.

Remind everyone where you are?

Happy coaching!

Thanks. I'm 11 miles from the Florida line in Valdosta Ga. 90 miles from the Atlantic beaches. 80 miles or so from the gulf and Panama city. Nice and warm down here. LOL

There must  be someone in the not so far cities of Jacksonville, Gainesville, Tallhasse, or evevn Atlanta, all wihin a few hours. Trying to get someone to come to you may be a bit tough but getting it towed via landoll ain't no picnic either. Good luck. At worst case, you ma to find a storage slot and sort it out arter you ger relocated. It's probably cheaper to get a room for a few months than all the costs involved with getting it fixed and moved. Diesel is stupid expensive.

Your air Governor sounds like it needs adjusting too. It is on top of the compressor.

If he is looking for leaks he will need to air up from the rear using shop air to find them all. Did the lines to the governor get mixed up?

At a 135psi he probably popped the release on the safety valves on the tanks, they never seem to want to seat again after one pops

Thanks for the help. I have a PPV valve on order at my local NAPA at $82.

Now. I need to replace the Quick release valve since the diaphragm fell out in pieces when I split it. I did a search on NAPA for the part and there are 3 or 4 that look like the one I need. However, I've had enough problems and want to make SURE I get the right one.

Anyone have a part number?

Only difference in Q/R valves is the crack pressure read the tag on the valve and order by it for a match, if the tag is missing where it bolts together will have the Bendix numbers it will be a Q/R-1

Hey Greg, try to get in touch with Jeff. He has a shop in Florida and is building one in Tennessee. He has a Wanderlodge now but used to have an MCI. Good mechanic on buses and 2 strokes.

Greg -

Luke at US Coach in NJ should have the PPV valve in stock, and can overnight it to you. 9-4, M-F, 856-794-3104 is his number. Make sure to put it in your phone's contact list!

I did hear from Jeff. He seems pretty knowledgeable and is a very calm individual. MUCH more than I can say about :-X me.
But I wouldn't expect anything less from anyone associated or recommended here.
Glad to see nothings changed the last 15 years.

Have a good weekend one and all.

I posted detailed information about the location of the pressure protection valve for Jeff on the Bus Grease Monkey forum today. It is possibly under a little fiberglass cover in the front bay on the passenger side, and the part number is Bendix 277147, or NAPA TWD BENOR277147X.

The MCI has a 1 way check valve for the tanks too it is not always the PPV. MCI is terrible about changing the schematics on the air and electrical system by serial and unit number., I have 5 different schematics for the MCI 9, I will never understand the drier at the front axle on a MCI 35 ft of tubing to the drier then routed, back to the tanks. Some models the PPV is inside the spare tire compartment on a MCI 9.fwiw you never know where it is at The replacement # is PTP 277147 same valve is used on the DD3 parking brake and the air wipers plus the door on some units, The air driers are great but they can cause problems on valves by drying the air to much for some older valves

On GMC 4905, optional air dryer is mounted left end of fuel tank recess. If it has optional full length tank, then must be elsewhere. I installed AD9 one where ac compressor use to be.

I have removed the QR Valve to look for numbers. There are a couple but none that I can find any reference to on line.

what differentiates these valves is the strength of the internal spring, along with port sizes.

The rest are various casting/body/batch identifiers.

The tag that gets attached under a bolt on assembly is mission critical, if trying to avoid ordering from the manufacturer.

Not sure what the current price spread might be, just call Luke with your credit card?

swap the spring to retain factory pressure. Clean it up first. I had to do that with discontinued inversion valves for my GMC.
Or you can download the Bendix air component book. It lists operation of various air brake parts, and in some cases, lists part numbers and pressure or component part numbers for each valve.

Look for numbers on the flanges where it bolts together.,Bendix will always have replacement numbers if the valve has been upgraded or numbers change anyways that is a QR-1 not a QR-1-_C  try Bendix # 289714.Haldex for a rebuilt valve is 289859X they have a core charge of 6 dollars and the paying the core charge is cheaper than sending it back FWIW ,it will cost you around 30 bucks either way you go new or rebuilt.

Thanks. Got it and ALMOST installed along with a new Quick release valve.

Now onto the fan replacement.

Does anyone know what size nut that holds the fan onto the shaft? (drivers side)

And is it a clockwise take off? Or counter clockwise?
