Title: slipping away
Post by: thoron on December 31, 2022, 10:20:07 PM
My 1966 Prevost with a Spicer 4spd manual trans has a clutch slipping badly it started with an air compressor coming loose and soaking the bell housing in oil and I would presume that the disc got soaked in oil does anyone have any advice on cleaning the oil of the soaked disc the clutch slips a lot then as is gets hot it will again dis-.engage or it slips a hell of a lot less. Am I destine to replace this 97k mile clutch seems to me to be a rotten way to start the new year thank you for any suggestions as I SLIP in to 2023....

Thoron -

Sadly, it sounds to me like you're going to have to replace the clutch disc. Once the lining gets saturated with oil, they're toast.

Soak in bath of lacquer thinner. Then bury in oil dry. Repeat. Should do it.

Flushing is almost impossible with a standard transmission he probably has the 2-disk clutch,he can remove the transmission then the clutch and save it maybe unless he has the glue on lining the oil and glue make for a bad deal and using paint thinner will add to problems if he has that type

If he has a way to blow Fullers Earth inside the bell housing it will dry the oil in a hurry from the linings, it is still used today by mining and construction for cable operated rigs with the friction clutches inside the drum and the brake on the drum,I haven't used it in while but used it many times over the years on oil soaked brake shoes and friction winches

You can just use oil dri straight.will need to be buried in the stuff for a month. New Pig Corp has a powered type that works well. Comes in a 25lb? Bag. I have it, but use it little because of the cost.
