Title: The new off topic post thread
Post by: HighTechRedneck on March 19, 2007, 06:58:43 PM

UPDATE:  As Nick has announced, the decision was made to revert to the way it has been.  So this thread and poll is now obsolete.  As has become somewhat of a common practice, when starting an off-topic thread, it helps everyone if the subject line is prefixed with "OT" or "Off Topic".  This way those who enjoy off-topic discussions can do so easily and those who don't wish to read them can pass them by.

A new composite thread has been created out of several off topic threads and this is where all off topic posts are to be made now.

A place to accumulate the various off topic subjects that some love and some hate. Maybe we can keep them all together in one place.

As noted, some people love off-topic threads and some hate them.  But as has also been noted:

... This will make it hard to keep up with a thread about any OT subject.  ...

In my opinion when multiple off-topic discussions are taking place, it will be difficult (or at least confusing)to follow the combined thread.

Please, lets keep this a flame free discussion.  Because of the mixed emotions, this is a hot topic.  But it is that very contention that dictates the need for an equitable solution.  There are many brilliant minds in this board.  Surely we can identify the best solution together.

I think the way it is doesn't allow a cohesive process.

And I agree, lets not make this a flaming topic, lets keep it adult and intelligent.

Agreed. If OT subjects MUST be pulled off the main board, I think we should make a separate sub-board so that the threads can be kept intact.

I don't always frequent the board every day and wouldn't bother reading through a single unfiltered thread of OT posts... from jokes and rants all the way up to the seriousness of someone's medical problems in a single thread. No thanks.

Some OT threads don't interest me and I don't read them. Others are very interesting and I do read and respond to those. I'm glad that the Board allows OT posts, and moderates them. But I can understand why if they need to be moved someplace else.

I agree that they are sometimes informative and fun, other times they do not interest me. So if they are in a separate category but left in tack would be great

There are not that many off topic posts.  As long as they are identified as OT people have the choice not to read them. Dont like me, dont like my posts? Simple dont read them!! If we could help people better label the subject of a post, it would help greatly when doing a search.

I agree with JJRBus, if you are not interested in the subject, don't read it. It is that simple. But at least all the subjects are on the main bulletin board for each person to decide what they want to read (or not read). Jack

Who is going to decide what is off topic?  We have two moderators chatting on the main board about a name change (no offense intended). Is that really bus related? Or if we do not label a subject OT will it remain on the main board?

I agree that that idea stinks, so you guys that want to get all the off topic posts in one place are just going to have to live with it as it was. Thanks for posting the survey HTR.
Richard

Hi Nick,
I like your decision. I am wondering if the 'Drivetrain' sticky is getting enough use to keep it?  I typically read titles that catch my attention and over look the stickies populating the top half of the page other than photos. I aways open new photos.

See, wasn't that easy?  ;D  When cool heads prevail progress can usually be made.  I truly believe that it's the Management of this Board, in addition to the general tranquility and attitudes of the Members are what makes it so successful.

Nothing is glitch free but under the circumstances I think our Moderators deserve a vote of confidence.

Hi Lee,
Richard can bring this over to the help section when he feels suite. I'm sure it will be soon

I have already tried copying and pasting all the O/T Jokes in the help section, but it gets very time consuming. I was hoping that we could get them all together on the main boad and not lose them.
