I recently bought a 1984 Eagle motorcoach conversion with a Detroit diesel 6V92ta and I'm in bad need of a new exhaust. Currently it's straight piped which admittedly sounds awesome but it blows thick black smoke everywhere. I'll be driving from Washington State (where I bought it) to Salt Lake City Utah in the bus to pick up my tow vehicle and then driving back to my home state of North Carolina. I really don't want my tow vehicle to change colors on the way. Can anyone recommend where I can get this problem remedied? Would a DPF be a good idea.
Well first it shouldn't be blowing thick black smoke something is wrong check your air filter.
Higher altitudes can cause darker exhaust, but a dirty air filter is definitely a possibility. The injectors might be a non-stock size and feeding too much fuel. Was it like this when you inspected it prior to buying it? Heavy black smoke is not normal and will waste a lot of fuel crossing the country. A muffler will do nothing to correct this. The noise and the smoke will draw more attention to you.
Check for a blown manifold gasket and the manifold for broken flanges or broken exhaust flanges on the piping going to the turbo
Thanks guys! The previous owner installed a massive air filter because it was recommended by someone but that will be the first thing I check and clean out.
I did not have it inspected prior to buying it because the person I bought it from is a friend and I have every degree of confidence he was/is honest. It runs very well minus the smoke but I think he got some bad advice/recommendations from "knowledgeable" people.
I'll certainly check the injectors when I can but was also told it could be an issue with the turbo, either not working properly or at all.
I'm setting up a FaceTime call with Scott from Bus Monkey Garage to help me with this issue. If you don't know who that is then go to YouTube and search for his channel. I think he's going to be a huge additional resource for me and you guys are as well so thank you so much!!
Pull the intake hose off and you can check the turbo yourself.it only takes a small leak on the hot (engine to turbo) to make one blow black smoke ? does it ever clear up or smoke all the time.we need a little more info to help you
luvrbus it smokes all the time, heavy smoke at all speeds. However it does run fairly well and starts up right away if that's any help. There was a crack in a flange but it wasn't part of the intake. Either way I tried sealing it with JB Weld extreme heat paste but I'm not sure it held. There are definitely leaks for sure somewhere because there's black soot all over the engine compartment and it's also getting into the bus which is extremely annoying. The previous owner said "diesel dust is just something you have to get used to because you're always going to have it" but I refuse to accept that. Hopefully I'm not wrong.
Exhaust turns your turbo that pressurises clean air into the engine if you have exhaust leaks before it goes into the turbo you lose the pressure it takes to turn the turbo therefore straving the engine of air which makes the black smoke. there should be no soot inside the engine compartment not normal. Your oil is going to get full of soot and unburned fuel too through ring blowby which is really bad for the entire engine. Needs to be fixed A.S.A.P good luck.
If you are going through Eugene OR on the trip, I can send Joe's number to you, and he can make the 6v92 happy again,tr206 covered it well except the fire danger that goes along with all the exhaust leaks
