Title: gluing wood in bus for a deadbolt
Post by: Dave Siegel on March 19, 2007, 05:37:56 AM
Well I have taken your advice and I will glue a piece of 2"x6" inside of the bus skin so I can safely mount the cylinder mechanism. What do you all suggest for glue? (That will be for gluing a chunk of wood to the backside of aluminum skin.)

For straightforwardness I would suggest using a 'glue' with some flex in it, such as a mastic or polyurethene foam, rather than a more traditional rigid glue. I know some of the modern 'instant grab' glues (not sure what they are called in the States) are very good at sticking anything to anything, but I don't have any personal experience of them. Coat the wood with something (resin would be best) to seal it before gluing it in place - ideally you would do a complete assembly 'dry run' first (thus drilling all the holes etc required) before taking everything apart and sealing the wood. Also clean the aluminium down with a suitable solvent (acetone, cellulose thinners etc) before gluing.

After I soaked it wit urethane for preserviing it, my first choice would be sikaflex.  I think another good choice for that applcation would be contact cement. Another option might be to drill some holes in the aluminum and put some drywall screws into the wood - as long as you have a way of covering the heads for cosmetic purposes.

Does the deadbolt exert some clamping force? If so the glue is not critical.  HTH
