Title: Steering Axle Button on Dash
Post by: Glennman on June 13, 2022, 01:33:08 PM
Hey all, my 2002 MCI has a button on the dash that says "STRG AXLE" (or something like that). I'm assuming this has something to do with the tag? A while back when I was installing a new tag air bag, I noticed a mechanism between the tires at the location of the tag tie rod that appears to be connected to power. What does that button do? I can't say that I have tried to do anything with it. Does it lift them for when going around corners? If it does, that would be a nice feature. How would I tell if it works?

Thanks in advance!!!

I seem to recall that you could manually override the tag steering when it started to malfunction, with a switch that would lock them all the time so they wouldn't move. It didn't lift them, merely manually enforced locking them in straight ahead position.

I drove a '99 DL a lot and I could feel it wander at speed and knew the tags weren't being locked by the intended system so at least I could force them to lock with the switch. They weren't supposed to be moving above about 10mph or so, But, The lock system wouldn't always work and the bus would not track steadily in a lane. Very uncomfortable feeling that many attributed to a front end problem.

MCI's track very well and are not prone to wandering in the lane when all is working correctly. I kept them locked all the time since I didn't see the value of it since all MCI's before had the tag just scuff away anyway. Tags are the last tire position before removal so the tires are mostly worn out anyway.

The '06 J coach I drove on tours was the closest thing to a fine Crown the way it was easy and predictable with very little driver effort to keep it where I wanted it. After a good Crown I'd say that J was my second choice for all around handling and delight in driving.

On mine it's called "tag lock".
