Title: Question for the salty mechanics. Thanks in advance.
Post by: Tedsoldbus on May 07, 2022, 01:32:11 PM
Will this work for keeping fumes out of the shop until I have air (5 minutes) and can then back it out? Trying not to pump diesel fumes into the shop where our adopt a hound lives.
It is 6 inch necked down to 5 inch (size of my exhaust pipe) and a 5 foot section of heating and air stuff from Home Depot.
Will it work with no risk to the engine is the question.

Thanks. I just put it together today and bucket was for the photo. I will have to scrounge something better to prop the pipe.
The hound lived behind the shop at a house where the old folks died. None of the kids would take her. I walked her over the years to keep her from howling all day on her 30 foot tether. She would pull most people off their feet so it was good exercise for me.
She is really "suffering" now. Rita bought her a couch. I installed the biggest dog door they make. I cut into the back of the shop and she learned it in 1 day. I just finished 1/3 of an acre of fence behind the shop so she can roam free now.
That is why I have not had MY bus out for a while, but what can you do. The family was going to put her down.
She loves kids and women but not most men, so for now..... I don't need to lock the shop! She is an expensive burglar alarm but is 9 years old and the shelter and hound rescue places would not take her. A few neighbors say they will feed her when we travel so she does not keep us from taking the bus on trips.
Sorry about the long dog story but it has been all I have been doing for 2 weeks....
But now that she is all set, I am cranking up the bus Monday to go get fuel while it is under $5 dollars.

Ted -

Personally, I would put another 90ยบ elbow plus 3' of pipe pointed towards the fence. Puts it that much further away from the door, reducing the chances of recirculating.

All bets are off, however, if the wind is blowing!

FWIW & HTH. . . ;)

use shop air to air bus up. No muss no fuss no fumes. Do you have aux compressor on bus?

The extension looks loose on the exhaust pipe, I suspect that it would blow off as it is. You need a better adapter or some restraint to hold it in place, and as suggested, more pipe. Thanks for taking care of that dog, it could hang around for another 5-6 years.

If he is showing signs of age related joint pain issues, consider adding Cosequin for dogs to his diet. We use it in cat version for our aging felines and it has done wonders.
I use a 4" corrugated rubber exhaust hose for mine when needed.

shop fan directing exhaust out the door?

Have to be careful though. The air exiting needs replaced by air coming in from somewhere. I always made sure to have exhaust at least 5 feet out from door. Now, I have a squirrel cage exhaust that directs it into my chimney. On a 3 way wall switch. Either waste oil furnace, or coach exhaust, but not both at same time.

Yes to box fan. In a "holler" as they say around here and no wind blowing at door so far. Bus will usually be parked closer to the door. That was first in.

Instead of that ridiculous extended exhaust pipe which will get knocked off on the first turn, turn it up and create an up exhaust. Good Luck, TomC

I use the same setup with shop exhaust pipe and hold it on the bus exhaust pipe with a bungee cord. Never came off yet.

Thanks Bill and others for good ideas.
I am starting it today. Going to have Rita start the bus while I hold the pipe on with welding gloves. The 6 inch sleeve actually fits pretty tight on the exhaust and I'll be surprised if it blows it off. I thought about a small hole on top of the sleeve and tail pipe so I could put a nail in both. That helps in that I can go over there and start and back out the bus alone. I just have to glue or tape up the 90 part to keep it from articulating. That Maguiver mod will also let me back it out after aired up with nobody walking along holding the pipe up in the air. After this start the bus will be parked closer to the door.

$4.91 for Diesel here for a short time guys! Come and get it. Ga Gov dropped the gas tax for a while. If Biden drops the Fed tax as is being discussed it could get better yet.

My buddy in Alaska just sent a text picture of a gas station in Anchorage. Diesel is $5.15 which seems a bit high to me since there are 3 refineries in Alaska and although we left Alaska in 2000 and things may have changed, I understand they still have access to their own high grade crude....
Way to go Murkowski !!!
