That's a later-model Bristol VR chassis (not a VP!) with an Eastern Coachworks (ECW) body. VR signifies a vertical engine in the rear, as opposed to the RE's flat rear engine. I'd be surprised if this bus could do only 45 MPH - all the VRs I've been in are good for 55 to 60 MPH, but maybe this one has lower gearing for hilly cities such as Sheffield? A few VRs were even built with express gearing for 70+ MPH long-distance motorway runs. Most VR transmissions were SCG 5-speed semi-automatic, essentially a clutchless manual using a miniature gate and electro-pneumatic operation.
I love those buses, and when I was a spotty teenager in England I dreamed of converting one, or maybe a Bristol Lodekka FLF, into a trendy 1970s bachelor pad on wheels. 'Twas not to be, but here I am almost 50 years later and 6000 miles away finally converting a bus.
