Title: 6V92 fan gearbox fluid
Post by: Tedsoldbus on December 06, 2021, 05:33:18 PM
Previous owner put a brandy new fan and gearbox on my engine. During the handoff he told me "Use this oil for that box, here is the dipstick and where to put it in. Make sure you keep a bottle of this in the bus".
8 thousand miles later, dipstick still says "happy".
Normal? They don't usually need any? Should that be changed out after so many hours/miles?

If nothing is burning it,,(as an engine will,) and no leaks in the system,,, it should last a LLOOONGG time and need replacing seldom..>>>Dan

Thanks. Will try to put that in the "quit worrying about it" box. Slowly learning this wonderfull sounding engine. Thanks to a couple of old guys that have done face time with me as I ask "what's this?".
Realized on my first two trips that when I open the engine box at a service center or truck stop, I better learn a whooooole lot more about it, take spares, take tools. Got everything working great....for now. Last 2 trips it ran great and about to dive into central Florida for 10 days to help a buddy. I think I'm addicted. My wife says "25 years in the military, you earned it. But I just didn't think your new passion would be an old bus?". Thank God her dad had a 4106 for 35 years....

Those angle drive gear boxes are supposed to be serviced every 50,000 miles or 1 year,it takes a Mobile synthetic SHC 634,take care of those angle drive they are  pricey little boxes made by Superior , they are easy to drain and refill

Gear oil doesn't generally go bad if there's nothing to contaminate it. Appearance is generally a good indicator.

Condensation and brass gear wear is the problem on those gear boxes in Prevost is why they want it changed lol 10 bucks for grease vs $1500.00 for the angle box it's Ted choice. To me the manufacture has done his homework and knows what is best in most cases

It holds less than a pint a quart now would probably be 20 bucks with todays prices
