Title: What does it do -- its purpose
Post by: richardkillmon on November 12, 2021, 05:44:31 AM
I have an 1976 Detroit 8V71 with a little tray under the oil dipstick
I first thought was it was an after market thing that the previous owner put on but I have seen it on many other buses.

Does anyone know what it is for?

Thanks

Rick

On mine there is an exhaust pipe directly under the tray and my assumption has always been it's there to prevent drips/spills from filling the oil to wind up on the hot exhaust.

It is oil tube support with a rubber isolator and serves as guide and safety shield for your hand because the factory ac belts and idler pully run under it.Believe it or not it has a group number that was a extra cost on MCI engines.MCI didn't want your hands or the dip stick stuck into running belts or belts breaking and ripping the oil tube out it has a purpose I always put those back on
