A guy at a campground had his tailpipe and some of his exhaust pipe painted. Said he got most of the rust off and painted it with spray paint used by the woodstove people. Says it has lasted 3 years. Good idea or bad?

Anything helps most systems are coated with alumnium to start with the majority rust from the inside out,I use the black with ceramic you buy at auto parts
how much work do you want to do ?
when I had my 6v92ta rebuilt they (leids diesel ) painted it .so because it looked so good I would repaint it every year and after a year or 2 there was less and less to paint as the rust was slowly covered up. I used a hvlp spray gun and tremclad rust paint not high heat paint . because I go south after christmas each year I always hit salt and worse brime on the roads . most times it is only 1 day of that crap and after we get home in march the engine has rust again and it is time to repaint . because of covid we did not go south last year and on the coach we have now no rust ! as we never had to go through the salt .
most times the paint will last 2-3 years that is on the exhaust other than near the engine
if you have a compressor and a spray gun a quart of paint will last for years

Or you could spend the money and fab up stainless steel.
Vht makes header spray paint for this in several colors. On a gas job, the paint turns white at the header flange. If you are going to go where the salt is. Spray the chassis and exhaust areas with SaltX when back home every year. Sold by gallon, dilutes to 30. Used a lot in Marinas with salt water. Probably available on Amazon.
Ooooh, la la, stainless steel! My kind of bling!
You gotta remove the visible rust first. Otherwise, nothing is going to stick for long.
Cerakote sells a line of ceramic coatings of various types and colors. Some do not need baking or polishing. Expensive but it seems to perform well.

Thank you for the feedback from all the salty senior guys. I expected someone to say bad idea because of "X". I try to avoid going north in winter but they salt the interstate from Atlanta north if they think there will be a single flake.
