anyone here know of a bunch or few in the North West or even North Central?Looking for a VS2 transmission from a 6 cylinder city model.
If you're exchanging a transmission that is out, this is the time to switch to the V730. Much better transmission and if you pull it down into 1st, you get transmission lockup in first also. The VS2 is downright dangerous to drive on the highway. There has been more than one bus crack up going down a long grade loosing brakes because of no braking from the VS2. Good Luck, TomC
The VS2 does provide braking,,, but when decelerating will kick out at about 18 MPH..>>>Dan ( There are times when 18MPH is faster than you want to go )

Just an observation and question. We had many many GM NEW LOOK transits and the all had the 2 speed (model escapes me) with the 6V-71 with under 200hp. So they while they were fine for stop and go, they were sluggish and really screamed over 45 mph. Would putting in a V730 in those improved performance?
The model tranny your thinking of Crabby was the VH9 it was in the early fishbowls.
It was a 2 speed, I had one in my 68 5303 top speed with the 5:38 rear end ratio top speed was 48 MPH.
I installed a 4:10 rear end the speed went to 58 with the VH9
I finally found a V730 and with the 4:10 top speed was 73MPH
From research I've done, the VS2-6 was used in 6V-71 fishbowls before the V730 came out.
The VH and VH9 two speed units were only used in old look buses.
VS2-8 were used in Fishbowls with the 8V-71's
I looked it up and it appears that the first NEW LOOKS actually had a 1 speed automatic. Hydraulic then it would shift into direct drive but it felt like a 2 speed.
Milwaukee County Transit had FISHBOWLS ranging from 1959-60 until 1967. The earlier version often went into direct drive with a crunch but the later one's didn't.
All of them had the 6V-71. I do remember even as a youngster that the older FISHBOWLS could not be used for the Freeway Flyer service because they were geared to low in the rear end. MCTS didn't get their first 8V-71 with V730 buses until 1978 and they were FLXIBLE's. Unless they had a few experimental versions in the FISHBOWLS, I don't think they ever had any VS model transmissions. I would have like to have seen them try the V730 in the NEW LOOKS just to see how they would have performed with the same gearing in the rear end. But with only 170 HP who knows.

My Fishbowl was built in the London Ontario, it actually was the last Canadian built TDH 5303.
I have the original delivery records showing the bus was equipped with the VH9 transmission.
The Buffalo was the first to have the V730 I believe
from the info, V730 came out in 76. Fishbowl production ended in 77 in US and 85 in Canada.
