Title: Resonator vs Muffler
Post by: luvrbus on June 15, 2021, 12:45:30 PM
I am replacing the exspensive MCI muffler with a Stainless Aero resonator to let the 8v92TA breath better, they make these in different noise level this on is low and takes the bark away from a straight pipe.I only post these photos to give you guys ideas and options that don't break the bank  looks like I cut the photo off at the top lol

I went with the Aero stainless (308 ) resonator ten years ago  because the turbo knocks out most of the harsh sound,, the resonator takes out the "crack" sound and leaves a mellow note..
I also removed two 90 degree elbows and replaced with 45 degrees to reduce back pressure,, it resulted in a horsepower increase that I like and better "off the  line" response..>>>Dan

Isn't Jordan the owner of Aero from your neck of the woods in Utah ? he gave me a resonator for my Eagle back in 2004 or 2005 when he 1st started making a 5 inch

I replaced the muffler with a Donaldson resonator on the 6V92TA in my 5C a few years ago. A little loud, although you can't hear it from inside the coach unless the window is open in a tunnel, lol. It makes the engine run cooler, and maybe a little more power. Frees up a lot of space too.

We cut the muffler off our MCI7 with 8V92 and put in a resonator 5 inch in and out. Now comes straight down form the turbo one 90 elbow in and the short pipe 90 out to side. Doesn't make much difference in the sound, unless you are in a tunnel. Starting up don't have to feather the throttle to keep the black smoke down, runs cooler, and has more power. Cut the old muffler apart and you will be surprised how choked up they are. Phil Lyons, Gary Hatt and I have all done this. Love it.

Sad part about this story is the bus had a new $700.00 MCI muffler that was ripped unloading off a Landoll trailer and was never noticed till it was to late

The mufflers on the 4106 GM can get heavy from build up,it was a dumb design 2-3 inch feeding into a collector with a 3 inch outlet they do build up carbon Dan is not pulling your chain  ??? this time

Is there an easy way on an 4106 to swap out the muffler to a resonator?

The problem with the 06 is space,, some have solved that by going UP the left or right corner and out the top..  This gives you the length needed for all the plumbing..>>>Dan

If you are thinking about the Aero for a 8v71 N/A engine forget it ,if you do, buy good ear plugs

I did that about a year and a half ago.  I was initially concerned that it seemed very loud but adapted to it quickly.  You don't really notice it when you are up to speed, but those around you might.

I remember there was a suggestion to put maybe a 7/16th bolt across the tail pipe to break up the sound.  I have to try that but keep forgetting.

Our NA 671's dual exhaust is 3" start to finish x two. Probably just over 200HP & totally dependable. No hurry, ever... ;)

Dan, does your dual 3" have mufflers or is it straight-piped...?

It has two Stemco mufflers. Not loud but sounds sweet.

We put an aero on our 500hp 8v92TA and I love the sound but it is definitely loud. Wouldn't mind making it quieter but I have zero room now that I have a huge trans cooler where the muffler used to reside. Oh well.

When you get tired of the noise, Donaldson makes a 5" oval with inlet and outlet on the same side for turbo engines. Check out Donaldson muffler M120131. I used it on my 8V-71 turbo and now have it on my 3406B I liked it so much. Good Luck, TomC
