We're swapping out a tired old worn governor. We have an identical spare and notice upon closer inspection that the gov that has been on the engine (left photo) doesn't have the Fuel modulating Cam in it (just below the buffer screw) the replacement spare on the right does. My question is what would be the reason for eliminating the Fuel modulating Cam? And how would it change the engine performance?
Our 4104 had the fuel modulating governor changed out soon after purchasing the shell before conversion. Had better low speed power starting out than the other one. Helped with backing up also.Picked up a small amount of smoke but it worked fine. Maybe in those days there wasn't a lot info on adjusting it to work better. Dont know.
Thanks chessie. From what I'm reading in the manual is removing the modulating cam actually eliminates the governor's ability to modulate fuel at all. If that's an accurate assumption then we'd been running a governor that doesn't modulate fuel, but only limiting speed. If that's the case then we are happy with how it's ran for lots of years. It's a turtle but extremely dependable most of the time. There are bus nuts that are tweaking the governor with stiffer high & low speed springs to gain responsiveness - but we're not certain that is the path we want to take...
Had dual exhaust on our awhile but turbocharging was the best thing we had done. Amazing how simple the plumbing is. Leid diesel did the job. Ran like it had an 8-71.
Best thing you do for a 6L-71 is start with good injectors,a DWLS governor, good linkage with a spring loaded fuel rod and know how to adjust the governor if it lopes something is not according to Hoyle .like they teach at DD the rpm speed goes up and comes down at the same rate of speed forget about adding springs
No added springs, just swapping out the high & low speed springs inside the gov housing for stiffer springs out of a larger V series detroit. The throttle response gets extremely quicker up & down but my respect for the original engineering goals keep me at bay. If it's something that would jeopardize dependability then I'm with Clifford but if it was something wrapped around "47 passenger comfort" &/or emission control - I'd tread softly...
