Title: Where to get brake chamber hoses with wire around them?
Post by: belfert on April 21, 2021, 05:33:54 PM
One of my front brakes has a flexible air hose surrounded by a spring/metal.  My other front brake the hose has been replaced with a standard air hose and the wheel has chewed part way through the hose.

Any ideas where to find a brake hose with metal wound around it?

My local hose shop makes any length and installs the wire guard before he crimps the last fitting on ,you can buy the sleeve cover  material to DYI that is what used on heavy equipment I bought 25 ft for around 30 bucks

I am not having any luck finding a metal wrapped hose.  None of the hose places will make any air brake hoses for liability reasons as they can't make a DOT rated hose.  The best I can find is Fleetpride will sell me a standard hose and then a Kevlar cover to stop wear.

The thing several people said was that my wheel should not be hitting the air hose in the first place.  I think the issue is my left front brake chamber with original hose has a 45 degree elbow going into the chamber and the right front brake chamber with the newer hose does not have that 45 degree elbow.  I am going to get a hose and an elbow.  Actually, I will get two hoses since the left one is probably 26 years old.

LOL my guy doesn't have  a problem making DOT hoses ,he even makes the silicone discharge hose wrapped S/S for the compressor

I still think brakes are over rated, all they do is slow you down :o :)

Hopefully in needed situations slow you down enough to stop!

Enzo Ferrari said something like, "I build cars to go fast, not stop".

I don't know. The old rope tied to a rock used to work and, at least, a lot simpler.

It turns out the spring guard was not OEM.  At least, I don't think it was.  I removed that brake hose and it was a complete hack job.  Whoever installed that brake hose used a bunch of adapters to get it to be male 3/8" NPT at both ends.  The side with the metal protected hose also had a 45 at the chamber.  I think that is the key to keeping the hose away from the tire.  The 45 is missing on the other side.

I bought two new correct air hoses plus a 45 for the one side.  I also bought some Kevlar sleeve to protect the hose in case the tire does hit it.

What a mess!

Brake timing, side to side, is affected by all this hack job.

Front axle should apppear symatrical on both sides, from the quick release valve where it splits, same elbows, fittings, hose length, hose diameter.

One way to know the coach is messed up, snap the brake pedal under way, and the coach changes direction with the snap.

Really not good in slippery conditions...

Happy coaching!

The good news is the brake hoses on each side were at least the same length.  I am replacing the hoses on both sides and the new ones are proper with no adapter.  The one hose had been replaced by a shop when I had the front brake chambers replaced some years back.  (Shop did not install the hack job hose.  That was there when I got the bus.)

Most hydraulic shops carry multiple sizes of spring guard for hose. In my experience tho the ONLY jacket I would put around any hose is the flat (approx 1/2" wide) plastic hose armor. Steel and even that cheap plastic convoluted wiring jacket will just wear into the outer jacket of your hose. If gravel gets in there, even worse.

Now that my hoses both have a 45 degree adapter at the brake chamber the one hose is no longer getting hit by the tire.
