I have a 1982 MCI MC9, and I would love to add a destination sign. Currently theres not one in it.
Is this something that can be added to my bus? I tried searching but only found people talking about removing them, not adding!
I have attached a photo of what my bus looks like currently in that area. Not great quality as I pulled it from one of my videos.
Thanks in advance!
I'd think that upper section with the destination sign would be easily available from a salvage bus. plenty around.
Remember that the destination signs in the 8's and 9's were placed in the upper part of the right hand windshield, not in the body cap centered above the windshields. I think the whole destination sign assembly is just an add on type thing mounted inside and at the top of the right windshield. I'd check the parts book and get the word out to all those who are removing theirs that you're interested in one. My guess is you'll get responses to take it off their hands with little money out of your pocket, except shipping of course.....
Salvage yards are also great places and you'll find yourself spending lots of time there if you can find a good one that does buses. Finding a good Salvage source will get you out of many trouble situations in the future since some parts are only available that way, or at anything approaching a reasonable price if it's a new item. Should be fun.

No, the -8 and -9 destination signs are part of the interior fiberglass roof assembly.

Caylor Supply in Rantoul, KS, specializes in scrapping MCIs, along with other brands. Sam's a nice guy, and he knows his stuff, which also means he knows what it's worth. Thus, don't even attempt to negotiate a price with him - he'll simply hang up on you! 785-878-3405 is his number.
Kyleayala -Why not consider one of those scrolling LED signs you see in some store windows, the ones with a single line of text. You could program it to say all kinds of things, from serious to silly. Might be a whole lot easier than trying to go back to an OEM factory sign? Here's a link to one example, which would be just about the right size length-wise to fit in the upper RH windshield:

My '87 NJT had one in the side window and one above the windshield. I think they may still be in my garage if you want them !
