Title: Allison 740 D transmission
Post by: Justin Swartz on February 07, 2021, 10:36:31 AM
Not.having any luck finding a rebuild or a good place to get one. Anyone have any ideas? Mine is blowing fluid out of the vent on top and I just changed the filter, pick up screen and fluid to try to fix.

Welcome to the forum Justin.

Any chance you could give us a hint where you are or what kind of bus?

Check the fluid level, over filling  they will blow fluid out the vent or the dipstick .if you live out west Penske in CA ,Global in Tucson AZ or Untied Transmission in Riverside CA  cost you around 3 grand + or - exchange

I'm stuck in Tennessee for work at the moment but had to have my bus towed most of the way from south east Texas after transmission went out. It's an 81 MCI MC9 that my family and I just converted. First conversion project

Did you save some of the old fluid?  What kind of shape was it in?  What kind of shape was the filter in?  Was there metal or stuff in the oil pan? Can you still send some old fluid off for a chemical analysis?  How did the 740 perform before?

Might just have been overfilled.  Or ...  :(

the main cause of that is overfilled transmission. could be that your tube or dipstick is incorrect. especially possible due to age of coach and whats been repaired or replaced over the years. hopefully, someone here with same trans can provide dipstick and tube length and dimension on add/full marks.

Did it got water in it from a flood and all the fluid in it is new I just changed it. No metal in the fluid when I dropped the Pan and it's not that it's over full because it will dump fluid out until it starts slipping from lack of fluid

Could it still have some water in it? I was told that it is very hard to get all of the tranny fluid out, so i would suspect that the same would be true of water.

G & W Diesel. 892 Kansas Street. Memphis, TN 38106. Phone:: (901) 948-1625.
Ask for Jason in the transmission shop, he's the manager of it and sharp at what he does! He is a lot closer than AZ or CA.
