Title: MC9 - 6V92 Starter
Post by: Kyleayala on October 19, 2020, 09:26:51 AM
Having some starter issues on my 1982 MCI MC9.

Basically, the starter stuck yesterday after shutting down the bus. We didn't catch it in time and, by the time we noticed it there was smoke pouring from the solenoid and it stopped.

I know that the solenoid is toast now, and I have a feeling that replacing just the solenoid might not solve my issues. I believe the stater in it now is the 42mt.

I've heard that the popular replacement is the 39mt but I'm not sure as to which one is compatible with my bus, does anyone have some insight into this? Maybe a part number?

I'm going to try replacing just the solenoid, but I want to be prepared to replace the starter just in case.

I dont know if it is the same but the 4104 had a small relay that provided current to the solenoid. Over time the points would burn and stick, causing a starter to keep running, burning it up if you didnt unhook the battery cables fast enough.

You might just need Brushes in the one you have and in the end of the Solenoid there is a copper plate that you can clean up and turn over then off you go again.

But if not the 39MT is the one Windtrader put up. I have that too and they are very fast, lighter, and they are only made for right hand engines like ours and yours.

I have seen that one, but am skeptical because it doesn't say that it fits the 6V92.

Can anyone confirm that the 8200330 will work on the 6V92? If so I'm going to go ahead and order one.

That is the right starter but me I would spend the extra bucks and buy the Delco 2nd generation starter

On my Kenworth truck with Cat 3406B, it had a 24v MT41 starter using a 12/24 series/parallel switch-so the truck runs on 12v, but the starter is 24. I got tired of all the crap so I replaced it with a MT39. I pulled out the series/parallel switch. The only thing I needed to know was how many teeth were on the starter gear. I told the guy at the parts store my engine, and the starter came in adjusted perfectly. I quite simply removed the big old MT41, and bolted into place the MT39 (like half the weight). I did have to change some wiring around. Since the MT39 takes half the amperage as the MT41, the MT39 was able to use the same battery cables. I had to rewire the batteries also. Best part-I only needed 3 of the 4 batteries for the new MT39. What to do with the fourth battery? It will be the generator battery. It flips the engine over very easily. Good Luck, TomC

Why Tom. Mine is 24 volts 39 MT and uses two Grp31. Plenty of power.
What does 3 do?

Real old truck drivers use 4 (6V) batteries.

lol 3-12v batteries are standard on trucks now with 12v systems on 24v systems it's two or 4,I did see a MCI owner that used 3-8v batteries for 24v
