Title: Bus Heat
Post by: Kenny on March 01, 2007, 04:42:05 PM
When it comes to heating using a diesel fired unit such as Webasto, Proheat, Aqua Heat, Espar etc. I've noticed that Aqua Heat offers a complete unit including reservior, pumps controls, valves, etc all included in a single unit. Others offer just the burner unit w/pump. Of you fellas out there, who has pieced their systems together and who has bought a complete unit? When piecing together, who's valves, pumps, heat exchangers, controllers, etc have you used? Can't make up my mind on which way to go.

I pieced mine together because my bus came with an Espar unit.  I bought all the rest of the stuff from Dick Wright. 541-744-4333.  Its probably better to talk with Dick than with Jason his "right" hand man.

This had the added advantage of being very space efficient. The aqua hot comes in a metal box that you put in a bay.  If you buy separates, you can distribute the components to fill the odd nooks and crannies.  By doing this and other things I was abe to use only one of my three bays for utility stuff, and still end up with 2 full open bays.

Having said that, I have also found David Haynes, who sells complete systems (800-685-4298 x127) to be exremely helpful even if you don't buy from him.

I pieced a Proheat together.  I get domestic hot water from a flat plate heat exchanger and heat from two baseboard zones.  Each zone has a zone valve controlled by a single digital thermostat.  There is about 35 feet of standard Lowes baseboard and it heats the bus to 70F easily when outside temps are in the single digits.  The Proheat is also in the tank bay, so that bay stays above 50F in single digit temps.  I'm fulltime in the bus and this Proheat is by far the best money ever spent on the bus.

Heh Ross what is the BTU rating of the Pro heat. What did you use for the baseboard heat exchangers?

The BTU rating is 45K.  I used the run-of-the-mill off-the-shelf baseboard from Lowes.  Nothing special.  It was $7 per foot.
