From what I've seen at the campgrounds we've been to, they are filled with people who view RV camping as a safer option for vacationing during Covid-19. Much more that than people living in them out of necessity.

On our trip finding a RV park that is not booked up till Sept is hard to find here in the west in the cool country,we had to stay 40 miles west of Boise to find a space and it was in the overflow for 4 days till a space came vacant,my luck Idaho was over 100F for a week
kinda stupid up here as the parks are empty but when you try and make a reservation on line the reservation service says there full ?
most of this is do to covid 19
my sister was at a provincial park ( like a state park ) last weekend and they were book full but in the park there was more empty sites then full ?

Many parks and campgrounds are listing sites as booked in order to keep 'social distancing' in place. They only want every other site filled, so they just list the others as booked so no one can use them.
It seems many private RV parks have plenty of filled sites. Different restrictions apply for the different types of places, campgrounds, rv parks, private, public, etc. The private ranch where I was for the past several months is open, although there are some concessions for COVID safety. On a daily basis, you'd never be aware of the craziness off the ranch. Some events such as concerts and owner dinner are canceled but river floats are on as well as BBQ after coming off the water.

RV parks where full in Boise ID lol some over booked and a lot of unhappy campers too
Sometimes empty spots occur in State or Provincial campgrounds as a result of people backing out of their reservation. I wonder if this could be why private parks sometimes "overbook" to ensure all sites are used and generating income.

Absolutely on campground overbooking. Some of the best sites we ever got was waiting at the gate at check out time catching a cancellation. They call them walk-ins. That waiting around has really paid off at state & national parks too! Fwiw.
Yes, "fail to appear" is a problem.
I know a few.
It's too easy to go online, block off a bunch of dates and spaces, and then just not show up. Even if they get dinged the charges, it's just the cost of camping to these peeps...
The closer to major urban areas, and the weekender set, the worse this phenomenom is...

ON the news tonight they were talking to a few RV sales companies and they said more people are going camping for Vacations this year and buying new RV's. They said their business is up 125% this summer. He started the summer with 420 units and now have only 150 left on the lot.
On our trip to Oregon in late June & early July we did not have any problems booking sites at KOA course we did it two months before our trip. In Boise I wanted to stay a extra day but couldn't so headed toward Pendelton and tried to stay there no luck so continued on and wound up boondocking it next to the Columbia river. No charge no noise and all by ourselves.

That KOA is in Meridian out side Boise we like to stay in the park in Garden City by the fair grounds on the river and Boise green belt,there was another KOA on the east side that is gone now.We spent a week not far from there @ the Country Corners RV part on the Sand Hollow exit off I -84 very nice well maintained green RV park if you come back way.I could have spent a few days at the KOA but didn't want that close to I-84
