It acts as if it is just not getting current, but there is current at the main switch, the speed control and the t-stat. The blade spins freely. Do the motors just die suddenly on these?
The most common failure on the fantastic is the hood switch.
Thomas is right. Almost certain its the hood switch that cuts power when you close the hood. Replace or bypass and your back in business
This one has a manual crank up hood. The only switches are the on/off speed, the t-stat, and the rotation direction switch. The motor appears to be getting power, so at this point I'd guess that that is the problem. I will hook it up to an alternative power source just for the heck of it though.

Lin you should have a hood switch it is a small button head that sticks when the fan has been used in awhile
This one must be older than that since there is no such button. However, the problem is solved. I finally got a little less lazy and braved the current heat wave on the roof. It turns out that one lead goes direct from the switch to the motor. The other, for some reason is joined at a threaded post with a nut. That was a bit corroded, similar to the classic bad ground issue. I guess I will go back up this evening when the sun is more hospitable to clean and put things back together.

That's the switch.
Your right, Thanks all
