I'm looking at a 1977 MC8 that's currently powered by a 8V92T/740 trans. My interest is the power train and spare parts. The 92 is installed cleanly enough it looks like a factory install however I highly question that. The air intake, exhaust, and complete installation is incredibly nice, as OEM looking. Has anyone done this conversion removing a 8V71N and installing a 92T or could this be a original install? My current bus is a 125,000 original mile Custom Coach 1977 MC8 8V71N/754 Really looking for more power while realizing that involves more heat. How would this run cool enough?
8V92 wasn't an MCI engine until into the MC9.
Easy to do a neat install in an mc8, with later coach pieces.
MC8 with some tweeks, and getting the Allison heat into an aux Hayden cooler, can be done. Smaller fan pully, upgraded rads, extreme sealing of the fan compartment, and driving the bus properly to defend against overheat.
Google Fred Hobe's coach building tips, in an MC8, he had a military 8V71T at 400 hp, and kept it cool.
Happy coaching!

Good read on Fred's page. Is he still in the business? Still with us?
No, Fred is deep into retirement, last i knew. Those notes of Fred's came out in the infancy of the internet back in the late 90's, and he had been in the game for a long time at that point.
Was very free with sharing what he had learned, working on a lot of buses for other people. An evening at the campfire with Mr Hobe was an education, for anyone who was smart enough to listen.
We are fortunate that those few pages were put together and continue to be hosted these DECADES later.
Happy coaching!

Most of his tips still apply today, he has quite a legacy of willingly sharing his knowledge. I hope he is comfortable in his retirement. :)
Old Fred took a lot of heat over wiring with extension cords from some here it never made any difference to me what people thought

I bet owners who have seen it both ways, really like that they can identify what is what with Fred's strategy of colour coding.
When you see what some peeps do, the stuff we all got upset about in the old days pales in comparison...
It the truth about how many "hot" coaches are out there, twisted wires covered in greasy electric tape, really got admitted to...
Happy coaching!
