Title: Power Steering Pump Pressure
Post by: luvrbus on February 19, 2020, 06:17:29 AM
Anyone know the operating PSI for a MCI C-3 power steering (Ross) 1500 psi doesn't sound right to me

That's the pressure for my '74 GM 4108, so it's certainly within the realms of reality.
Aren't the pressures in the MCI manual like in the GM?

If I had a C-3 manual I would not be asking when I updated the power steering on my MCI 8 it went from 1000 psi to 1850 psi my DL is 2250 psi I am trying to find out what a C-3 psi setting is because he can not turn the wheel unless it moving

Don't know the spec for your rig, but on power steering in general it it tends to be a variable that can be fiddled with to get the results you need. The main limiting factor is the pressure side hose(s). As long as the rating on that is adequate you can go up to around 2500psi without worrying about it too much. Still and all it's probably best not to overdo it.

This became a big thing with so called monster trucks back when the craze was to fit 35" tires to pickups and other 4x4's. Suddenly the power steering wasn't up to the job. Those systems typically ran about 1100-1200psi but it was easy to fit a washer in behind the pressure relief and jack that up to about 1500psi which usually did the trick. A mod that was well worth doing and I never heard of anyone having a problem with the increased pressure. You might expect more pump wear but apparently it wasn't an issue.

You cannot shim the valve on the Vickers pull the pin and change the complete valve assembly for a 100 bucks Vickers has you by the balls on that one

When converting from air steering to Sheppard, the pump originally put out 1,500 which wasn't enough. Put in a 2,200 pump and worked great. Good Luck, TomC

I sold cases of manuals from most every bus out there some time back.  Cliff if you call J.D. at C&J he will probably know the answer right off the top of his head.  Good luck reaching anybody who knows anything at MCI.

In other news, I was in the process of flipping my vickers pump vane and had a kid crisis and can't remember which direction it was. I think it's right and installed the pump but if I'm wrong am I going to ruin something?

Cliff I sold them to Stan Holter, they have a huge library of everything.  I had all the MCI, GM, Eagle,Prevost, Crown, Detroit, Allison, etc.  Still have some Prevost, Detroit, Allison, Cat 1693, and an Eagle 15, and the Eagle Premier A/C manual.

I may give Stan a call I have a huge selection for the older stuff and a lot for the later model electronic engines and transmissions, turbos, injection, electrical, gearing you name it.I would like to see mine go someplace where they could be used since I have so many rare manuals. I am not really interested in the money I would rather see the manuals used in some way

I do but if you do F/B they have a lot of schematics for Eagles check out Vintage Bus Mechanics ( not the same as Grease Monkey) and Eagle Owners if they are not posted they will send you one Steve is good about that

If you want to part with your air line schematic for the 15, I would appreciate it. I just got all of Boomer's Model 15 manuals, but it did not include that. I have a schematic mounted on the electrical panel door, but it's hard to stoop down that far. You could include it with the LED lights when they happen.

If that doesn't work out, remove the door and take it to a copying outfit and have copies made, maybe enlarged 50 to 100 percent. I had that done with my wiring diagrams and brake line diagrams. Much easier to follow.

That is an idea, but the door on the Model 15 is fairly big. I can picture being thrown out of Staples, Kinko's, etc. Which outfit did you use?

I have photo stitching software if you would to take multiple pictures moving about 20 percent a time with 40 percent in view.

That's how I ended up scanning all the circuit diagrams for my bus.
