Title: Giraffe G4
Post by: luvrbus on January 14, 2020, 06:11:47 PM
A friend of mine gave me a new Giraffe G4 today that measures the clearance to a object you going under from a pre set height of the RV,  it sounds good does anyone here have one and uses one lol I don't trust manufactures sales pitches

I think it is connected to all the rooftop items, so when you knock them off, it notifies you so you can pick up the debris.lol

I am not impressed with the Giraffe if the gizmo warned in advance it would be ok,once under a low clearance for it to read not so good IMO

It sticks up far enough to get whacked off if it fails to warn in time.  :o

Seems like something that might be helpful for a fifth wheel or maybe even a Class C motor home, but for most Class A motor homes or buses I can't see it helping much. Perhaps on a Buffalo style bus or Scenic with a lower front cap it would help.

But, you've got to inch your way under the overpass while the thing measures, and by the time you are under enough to get the alert you're going to make a royal mess trying to back out if you need to. Not to mention the traffic behind you while you inch through.
Seems to me if you've got time to inch through an unknown overpass like this, you've got time to pull over before hand and find out how tall it is.

Maybe one of these mini cams mounted near high spot could be useful. Some will work if monitor has rca inputs, although they make adapters so other type inputs will work.

This device is intended to enrichen its manufacturer...

The busnut can get one's sorry @$# up and stretch one's legs having a look, since that's the only step that this thing might save.

Investing in one of the fancier gps units that you can set your height, would be money better spent, if you are afraid of overhead clearances.

Happy coaching!

I suppose it all depends on how far in advance it warns you.  One hundred yards may be okay.

The best warning is pay attention lol the GPS routing gets a lot of AC units at the Needles CA underpass coming into AZ this time of year

8 foot, they have low clearance bars and warning signs and people still hit the underpass, there was bypass across the tracks but BNSF closed it 5 or so years ago when trains kept hitting RVers

People post videos of that underpass on youtube. Wart removal, peels, and even downright wheel jumpers. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

Local-last nite-permit load routed around local busy 4 lane-bridge just replaced last year--6 million in damages-6 months down-30,000 vehicles a day rerouted.  Can't defend stupid. Only 15ft 6 inch clearance.. Load was over that.  Had a escort checking height also.  Best tool  (brain) must have been on break.
