Has anyone had any luck rebuilding a Detroit fuel pump or tried to rebuild it and failed? Mine is leaking, and before I replace it, I'd like to hear if anyone's rebuilt one? How hard could it be? Gaskets and o'rings?
I rebuild DD fuel pumps, but I have the special tool to R&R the seals without damaging them.
Just get a new one and the ear drive piece. It's not like they are that expensive.

In the 80's, rebuilt fuel pumps were under $50. I think the price now is 3-4 times that. Supply and demand. I do them for $50. Forks are usually okay. Good luck!!
You all know how all these old american rigs are built, to be serviced and not just disposable like all the chinese garbage flooding the market. I do get pleasure out of fixing stuff still, until my hands no longer work, ill keep doing it. If figured that fuel pump should be easy to fix. Ill try to find an exploded view in one of my manuals.
Kits for a Detroit pump from a DD dealer are around $140.00 you can buy the cheap after market kits for around $80.00 you need the right tools to rebuild one it's not a slam dunk

The fuel pumps I see are either right or left spinning. Which ones are we all using for the 6v92's? I see em on ebay for $150 or so.
The L and R is for suction location they all turn to the right
All the ones we use are LH, it is stamped on the front of the fuel pump.
I never rebuild a pump when I replace it I always replace it with the high volume pump for a 8v92 DDEC engine even on a 6v92 or 8v71
These guys have them 109.00 to 152.00 :)

Once you get a part number, check Amazon.
I need a diesel lift pump for my Kohler/Perkins generator and ordered from the diesel source for $80.00 and once I received it and had the part number I could have gotten it for $35.00 from Amazon.
