Title: Anyone with Series 60 have suggestions on why cruise control doesn't work right?
Post by: belfert on September 03, 2019, 04:27:09 AM
The cruise on my Series 60 works, but on even small grades my bus will often slow considerably because cruise isn't commanding the engine to full throttle.  My Silverleaf shows engine load and often the engine load will be at maybe 70% and cruise isn't applying more throttle push the engine load higher.

If I push on the pedal while on cruise the engine load doesn't go up.  We discovered by accident that turning off cruise and hitting the pedal will cause load to go to 100%.  We didn't try it again to verify this.

Ideas or suggestions here?

Get into the DDEC settings.

Power settings for pedal and cruise, speeds allowed, can be set differently.

Some crazy ideas as to "controlling" the driver and the fuel economy...

You'll probably find the cruise settings are strangled.

You need to have it reset I recall you had 6th gear unlock on your bus,the cruise settings does not recognize the change

I guess I'll have to take it to the local Detroit dealer to get it reset.  I don't have the software and tools to work on the DDEC.

I was over at the local Detroit dealer yesterday and the manager said he would talk to the senior mechanic who works days about my issue before I bring it in.  The mechanic was out today so I hope to have an answer tomorrow.

Mine did not work in my Eagle with a Series 60 for the first 4 years I owned it. I took it to my mechanic in Eugene, Oregon Joe Maser and he fixed it for me last month.  The E-brake has to have a 20# pressure switch in the air line and the brake pedal needs a 2# pressure switch.  (I believe this is what he said, but you should verify.)  But something close should work I would think.

He had to change one of these because one of them was the wrong one and it has worked fine ever since.

To be clear my cruise control works.  The problem is when going up a grade it won't increase the throttle to keep the speed up.  It might be running the throttle at say 65% on the flat, but it will stay at 65% even going up a grade while the speed falls.  It should be increasing the throttle to keep the speed up.

Hummm.  Can't help you with that.  It definitely should keep up and the Jakes should engage when going down a steep hill.  Someone else will have to chime in on this.  I wonder if it is not reading your speed sensor?  Just guessing at this.  Not sure if it reads turbo pressure or speed to tell it to kick down a bit more.  But someone else on here probably know the answer.

The local Detroit dealer changed a parameter in the DDEC to match the higher overdrive with the six speeds enabled.  They claim cruise is fixed, but I have not been able to test yet.

Only if it is programmed to do so, and at what speed differential, whether on its own, or only if the jakes are on, to how many steps... This is all adjustable in the computer.

A lot of people if turned loose with the tool, will really ruin the drive ability of the coach. There are so many ways to get that coach to make its own decisions, that a particular owner-driver will not want...

Buses will be up for sale only because of the monkeyed settings...

Happy coaching!

Yes, it works much better now.
