Title: Jake Brake - Performance Report
Post by: richard5933 on August 18, 2019, 05:55:02 PM
We are in the middle of the first real test of the Jakes which were installed this spring. Drive took us through the Appalachian Mts in Southern PA. Not the Rockies, but a test nonetheless.

At this point, I'm happy to report that the bus is much easier to drive than before, as the Jakes do a great job of holding back speed. Actually, on these grades I could probably do with just one bank turned on, as it is they tend to slow us down too much.

The only possible issue right now is some oil spotting on the back of the bus and a bit of black smoke at times (especially if the engine is lugged at all. Neither was there before the Jakes - the bus used to stay spotless.

Not sure if the adjustment needs to be tweaked or if this is to be expected.

That Jakes on a 2 stroke no adjustment will help you, plus the more you use the Jakes the oil consumption will increase on a 2 stroke

Black or blue smoke?  Does the mighty Detroit smoke while the Jake is working?  Piston rings?  Valve guide seals?  Dunno fur sures.

Black smoke best I can tell. Not much, and more so when first starting. Only occasionally while driving if lugging the engine.
