Title: Entry door latch
Post by: thomasinnv on August 11, 2019, 04:15:07 PM
I talked to Luke a few days ago about a rv style door latch for the entry door. He suggested that some on this here board had mentioned a specific latch in the past. The door thickness is just shy of 2.5". Any ideas? Most rv style latches will only work in doors up to about 1.75" thick.

Any help would be appreciated.

There's a guy on YouTube doing a 4106. His channel is called Beginning From This Morning. He has a two-part video on installing a door latch on his bus. Here's the link to part 1. Hope it helps.

Keep in mind that if you install one of these RV style latches you'll likely be doing away with the handle by the driver to open/close the door. The guy in the video I sent you was able to keep it I think, but he used a pretty sophisticated solenoid system to open the latch from the driver's seat.

The standard RV door latch is made by Bargman.  On my bus door I just had to use longer bolts for the thicker door.  I recommend a dead bolt to go with it.

When I replaced my 2-piece door with a 1-piece door on my MC-9 I went to a junkyard and got a heavy-duty door latch out of a wrecked Volvo truck.  Forgot what I paid, but not much.  This is also an option and it will probably outlast anything you buy in an RV store.  Truck doors are designed to be opened many times per day (to go Pee) and run 10-20 hours per day and sometimes 365 days of the year.  Most RV doors are designed to be opened many times per week for a 2-4 week period of the year then stay in storage the rest of the time.

P.S. Be sure to wash it off very well before you touch it. ;D

I installed one of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N58KQMQ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_JEzuDbDKN43C4  (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N58KQMQ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_JEzuDbDKN43C4) on my 102c3....I did have to weld together an inset and do some cutting to get it installed.
