Title: Pinion seal
Post by: Rick 74 MC-8 on June 23, 2019, 09:08:01 AM
I need to replace the pinion seal on my MC 8. I was wondering when reinstalling the yolk how tight should I tighten the nut. Do I count the threads or do I retorque it?

Thanks

I remember the GM 4106 spec's out at 600 foot pounds,, I was in a poor position and could only pull 450,,it also had a keyed nut,, so inserted the cotter key and 24 years later it has not moved.>>>Dan

Make sure your rear end vent is not plugged.. Many a mud dobber  nest has caused a blown seal

Thanks. Haven't even been under to check it yet but I know it's leaking. I wasn't sure how hard to pull (probably more than I that I'm capable) I just didn't want to over tighten and change the preload on a bearing

Thanks Rick

The preload should be set with shims or spacer. They only use crush sleeves in cars and trucks. At the  approx the specified torque, there should be a specified lb-inch rotating drag.

You need to know the shaft size for torqueing a MCI  8) your luck you probably have the 1100 lb torque one,use a 5 to multiplier if you have access to one, that is what I use gone are the days for me tugging on anything over 300 ft lbs

So in your opinions. Should take the pinion carrier off and doing on the bench? I was originally just thinking pulling the yoke off but it sounds like that might be tough.

Thanks

I would find some one with a pit and pull the yoke if that's is the only problem a leaking seal a good 3/4 impact will remove the nut, the carrier is not that big of a job to remove either and gives you a peak at the bearings sometimes you don't like what you see  8)
