Title: Power Steering Fluid?
Post by: tyreman on June 17, 2019, 08:39:32 AM
I have a MC9 8V71 with what looks like a leak on the power steering reservoir, it currently has ATF in it. What is the proper replacement fluid?  ATF, 10w oil, something else? Can you mix ATF and oil or does it need to be completely flushed of old fluid before adding a different type?

Don't mix them. Some guys don't use Dexron because they are afraid it might get into the oil if then pump seals fail.

Does having or not having the integral steering box matter for what fluid you use?

No. I use 10W oil as it flows easily in cold weather. I wouldn't use thicker then 10W or the pump will squeal.

When I changed my air over steering to Sheppard integral, the rebuilder of the Vickers pump told me to run 15W-40 engine oil in it. Granted it makes some noise when cold, but other than that, all OK. Good Luck, TomC
