Title: When you have to be towed
Post by: David Anderson on June 03, 2019, 07:15:40 PM
When they pull the axle out to disengage the drive shaft from turning while the bus is being towed, does all the oil dump out of the rear end and drop box?  How does that all work?  Does the tow driver pull both sides?

If you pull both axles you lose very little, the axles pickup the grease and funnels it to the hubs it is best to pull both axles on a Eagle because of the drop box

When you pull the axles you want to put a cover on but its to keep crap from going in, not to keep oil from coming out.

When mine was towed in January, he only removed one side. The tow truck operator had a cap the right size for my axle to keep the junk out and the oil in. You can see in the picture, you can not help but lose some when you remove the axle.

Most tow operators will have block off plates (typically just made of wood) when they pull the axle shafts. The easier is to pull the drive shaft, but of course on a bus, this might not be possible because of ground clearance (another reason I love my truck). Good Luck, TomC

When towing very far you should demand that both axels be removed,, this prevent the destruction of the spider gears in the third member.>>>Dan

That answers my questions.  I kind of figured both axles should be pulled (eagle) and that some sort of plug/cap over the hub end was appropriate.  I just never saw it written before when reading various towing threads.

Thanks,
