Clutch and brake rebuild shops don't charge very much to do a complete rebuild which includes resurfacing the pressure plate. If it just needs to be cleanerd up, you may not have to do the flywheel. They have all the tools and knowhow to do it right. It is a lot of work to have to do it again if you don't do it right.

$1700.00 sounds like a price to replace, not repair. I still suggest that you go to a brake and clutch shop and talk to them. If you have it all part, take all the pieces with you, including the flywheel if you have it off.
