Do to a dumb mistake by me I have to evacuate my cruise air system. Does anyone know how much R 22 and oil a 14000 btu Cruise Air system should take
Thank You
Wayne
I had sent a message to Nick and did not see his reply. Sorry about that Nick. The man that is helping me likes to go by the scale so I was hoping there might be an amount they were charged with from the factory. If not I will show him your suggestion and go from there.
Wayne
If you can remove it very slowly, you can avoid oil loss. Any amount recovered can be measured and added upon refill. I know some technicians watch the frost on the line when recharging without weighing. Doesn't the unit have a label or stamped spec?
I don't think he has any left to recover...
Is there a plate or sticker on the unit anywhere?
One of the good side effects of the environmental regulations, all the new stuff comes with the refrigerant data attached to the machine somewhere.

Freon is going to depend on a lot of things, the Cruise Air have sight glass shouldn't be that hard unless you just want to know how much to buy.I had Cruise Air (3) in the Eagle, man I miss those but they are touchy on the charge
Here's the manual, it doesn't specify the weight, it just gives a temperature-pressure chart which should be helpful. - Steve
I bought these units new from Nick 7 years ago. I needed them on hand back then so I could arrange them as I but the condenser on the roof in pockets. I do not see ( and I looked at every sticker and plack) how much r 22 or oil they came with. One of the units had a leak at the valve so it was low on feon. We have evacuated the system and think it was the king valve packing nut. We now have pressure tested the system to 150 lbs and drew a vacuum to 500 microns. Some oil came out through all this. So I guess we will but some back in. I have read a ton and no where that I have look do they give that information. We are looking for information on the compressor maybe there is something there. Can I get close enough using pressure with it being as cool as it is? I am taking the bus to California for paint and they will have it for a couple of months and I want them to work on the way back to Colorado.
They are a split unit with so many different configurations the tag inside is all the the information you get
Yes I understand there can be a lot of different configurations, but they come charged and say there is enough the fill most systems. What is so secrete about that amount. Rant done. Thank You everyone for the information we will fill it by pressure and temps and put SOME oil in it

All part of the conspiracy of silence...

Mine came with a low pre charge but still had to be charged after installation, when in doubt about a Cruise Air call the disturbutior in Kemah Tx. Mine were made by Taylor yours are probably Dometic with changes
I've always just added r22 until the line begins to frost a little and quit. Maybe a little more on a hot day. A couple cans are more than enough for a roof unit.

His are not roof units they very high dollar marine units .I understand his concern they are very touchy on a charge and even new but 7 years old he probably has no warranty from Dometic
I don't mean to hijack this thread but I logged in this morning to research the Cruisair units because one of mine was freezing up and now won't even blow cold air. Can someone point me in the right direction of where to get these repaired or partially replaced? I'm pretty sure mine is around 1990 vintage.
Thank you!

Freezing up,,, low on freon (R22) . These Guys have all the knowledge and parts you need to fix your AC's.

I should have asked this question last year! I feel bad asking so many questions but this bus came with such a steep learning curve. Thank you, muldoonman!
Anytime. Had to learn to work on my 3 behind front bumper on my coach. These guys know there stuff for sure. Fred can and will answer all your questions and seems like a nice Guy.
This is what I found out about my Cruise Air. ( I am the luckiest guy in the world the man that helped me worked for me for 10 or 12 years. Heavy and highway concrete can be hard on ones body so he took HVAC school while he worked for me and then went into that business.) We evacuated the system and got about .42 lbs. We pressure tested the system with nitrogen at 150 lbs. We then purged the system with nitrogen. We then pulled a vacuum to 750 microns for about 4 hours. We then added 1.74 lbs of R-22. we ran the system and took some temp and pressure measurements to get some sub cooling and super heat readings. We are not completely satisfied with those reading but will re visit that when it warms up and the system works a little harder. We did not add any oil as we think there are 512 cc of oil in it from the factory and the amount I lost was minimal. The guys over on Jon's pervost site also have some good advise as to how to add the correct amount of freon. Their way is a little more by the seat of your pants and I will use their way along with the PT charts. I will say so far these are nice units. Way more quiet then the roof airs on the 05. Most know I have the condensers mounted on the roof and should have no problem cooling them.
Wayne
Only problem with those units they need plenty of fresh air or they kick out from the heat, the people at Marathon mounted a unit in the engine compartment and it always gave me a problem till I had it moved

Hi Wayne,
Sorry I didn't catch your post earlier...
The only reason I gave you that way to charge is because I don't know how long of line sets you have. Neither does Cruisaire so going by temp/psi charts
and by psi readings on a 70 deg ambient day is what will work best for you with me not being there myself. It sound like you have it somewhat under control
now. You should be real close.
Regards
Nick-
