Title: 8v71 16v71 tear down and explained
Post by: neoneddy on January 04, 2019, 04:32:54 PM
I've been watching this guy lately, he found a 16v71 in a junkyard , got it running , then killed it :-(

But the video of the autopsy has been interesting.

Interesting video.
What I found really interesting(if its true) is that the rotation of the starter determines the rotation of the engine.

nope. The air starters can be changed from right to left depending on the engines rotation. Like MCI are t drives so they are right hand where as most GM's are sideways and left hand. You can only do that with air starters.

So Mr or Mrs.? Prevost 45 you might want to go back to your profile and give us a first name so we know who we are talking to and an about or state maybe so in case you have a guy close that you might need some help one day they might have a bus also that they may need help on.  :)

Air starters are like a hydraulic starters they are easy to change the rotation, but the drive has to be changed too

Bought a used Roadway tractor several years ago with a 6v-92 and air starter for the engine and transmission.Hit the starter button and it instantly was running. They only used a group 27 battery for the electrics. No gauges, just lights. It used about a 40 to 50 gallon tank for the air supply.

Best thing about an air starter ... watching how high people jump that are standing beside the vehicle when you hit that start button.

Well here's a thing: one of my all-time favourite movies is Mad Max 2, and there's a scene in it where Max starts the engine of an abandoned / crashed / scavenged / hijacked / shanghaied Mack truck - and ever since I first saw the movie I've wondered why the starter sounded so loud and high-revving. I did wonder whether it might be an air starter, but that was only a guess since I've never heard one in real life

So having read this thread I thought I would see if there was a clip of the scene on Youtube in order to ask whether the sound was indeed that of an air starter. And bugger me, not only has someone posted a clip of exactly that scene, but the title of the clip is "Air-start System Truck Start"...

Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZrFkGdti8c (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZrFkGdti8c)
