Title: Changing the filter on an 871
Post by: Fred Mc on November 24, 2018, 11:18:56 AM
I am just about to change the old cannister style oil filter to spin on filter.  Can you change the filter without draining the oil out of the crank case. I tried draining the oil out of the filter casing but there seems to be a lot of oil in there and I'm wondering if you have to drain the crank case first.
Thanks

Fred

It probably holds at least two quarts, and no you don't need to drain the pan. The element will drain awhile. You do need to shut engine off though.😋

Lol.  A good laugh is always welcome. Now that I am about to put the adaptor into the filter head I noticed there are two rubber gaskets that are supplied. One is about twice the thickness of the other one and the one you use depends on the part number of the filter head which I unfortunately can't find or see so I'm wondering if it really makes that much difference if you use the thick rubber gasket.  One looks to be about 1/32 of an inch thick and the other one is about a 16th of an inch thick. Maybe Clif remembers.
