Title: 1966 MC5 Manual Clutch Linkage Settings
Post by: DEMOMAN on November 15, 2018, 09:26:02 PM
All,

A friend of mine has a 1966 MC5 with a manual transmission.  He has just replaced the clutch and is having trouble adjusting it.  The main problem is that we don't have a service manual.  I know, I know, get a manual is what I told him, but, we have run out of time and this bus has to get back on the road asap.  I was searching through the forum posts last week and saw a couple pictures of the service manual pages for adjusting the clutch linkage but, for the life of me, I cannot find them now.

Could anyone who has a manual PLEASE take some clear pictures of the linkage adjustment procedure pages. One of the pages had measurements and distances for the linkage arms. I know it needs to be set to the factory settings to work properly so we must be pretty far off.  We would really appreciate it and I promise He WILL get a service manual soon!

Thank you all very much,

Demoman

It's unlikely that most of the linkage got changed just by changing a clutch, since you don't touch them for that job.  There are two external adjustments that can be made on the linkage attached to the transmission.  First is to adjust the height of the front of the air assist cylinder so it is exactly in line with the clutch arm that it pushes on.  There is a half inch bolt that you use for that that acts as the rest stop for the front of the air cylinder.  The second adjustment is for free play of the throw-out bearing.  You use the hand-grip knob on the side of the transmission, you lift it up to engage it on it's threaded adjusting rod, you turn it clockwise to tighten the adjustment until it won't turn any more - zero free play at that point.  Then you turn it counterclockwise to loosen off exactly one full turn.  That is the only service adjustment for the clutch.

When you install the clutch you have to adjust the height of each individual finger on the pressure plate to 1 3/8" below the face of the pressure plate.
