Blew the o-ring in my power steering for the second time in 2 months. This time I am not at home and need to move by tomorrow morning. Is there a standard o-ring that I can purchase at a hardware store? How can this be prevented in the future? I have the original power steering, it uses standard 30 weight motor oil.
Is this Shepperd full power steering or assist power with cylinder? What o-ring and where are you talking about.
I think, (not sure) that if you have power assist power steering and not full integral power steering you may be able to safely steer the Bus Conversion without the power assist working?
The Bus Conversion if it has such will revert to Armstrong manual steering. Muscles required.
This may let you continue your trip and get you home. When my good mechanic replaced my Victor VT42 power assist power steering pump with a bigger one along with the long hoses ...
... he took extra time to "center the system?" or "realign the system?" so that it worked properly. Also took a little bit to get the air out. When done superb power assist steering.
Hope this helps you some. I do not know what kind of power steering you have.
I have the original power steering. I do not believe I have the shepperd. I'll look it up when I get home but I know it is original equipment, if that helps. I went to O'Reilly and picked up several o-rings. Put one in and it is holding for now, so I can make it home now. Would like to figure this out so it does not keep happening though. Maybe time to upgrade to shepperd? $$$$
Are you blowing the seal ring on the Vickers pump at pressure relief valve ?
We looked it up in the book, and apparently I am blowing the seal in the pressure relief valve. So maybe the valve is bad? Also, the book says my pump is made by Sheppard and it creates 1,500 pounds.

That is a Vickers with a Sheppard tag, that takes a square cut seal from Vickers a o-ring will not hold for any length of time

Yup, wrong o-ring.
I called Luke and he said he sent me the the correct o-ring. If this is not the correct o-ring, where do I get the correct one?
Get the model number from the pump the seal will probably be part # 199390 or 262332 they are easy to find I buy mine from Power Steer Inc. www.powersteerinc.com the seal cost about 10 bucks and are easy to find on the net, fwiw I just popped a relief valve out of a old pump it is square cut
Thank you luvrvus! I will do that.
I ordered part number 262332 from Motion Industries. That part was for Vickers. I will let you know how it goes.

I wonder if he checked the pump model to be sure the 2623322 was for his pump ?

That's why having a Motion Industries within driving distance is a big plus :) They even had stepped key stock and offset keys :)
I did not have a way to cross reference but it was only $4 so I'll try it out. It said it was for Vickers (Eaton) but did not give me a model number.
There is only the 2 anyways so you have good odds it is right
In my experience 50-50 is usually 90-10. Lol
Me too the one he ordered is the most common and 4 bucks is a good price,I need to find a deal and buy some more,I am still passing out the Jake seals I bought a few years back 8)
This banter was very helpful! For some reason I did not see the other part number when I was searching but now I see that Motion Industries sells both, and they are local here in Sacramento, which I also did not know. So I will be driving there and taking a look at both part numbers and buying a couple extra. 199390 is only $6.59.
Well, good thing I placed the second order. 199390 is the correct o-ring. 262332 is way too small. I popped it in and it is holding, for now.
Maybe consider running 15W-40 instead especially with colder weather coming. Good Luck, TomC
If you installed the right seal it's good some of those pumps run on 2500# psi,the standard o-rings just don't hold
I compared this o-ring to the O'Relly o-ring that I got for one dollar, and I can not tell a difference at all. I even put them both under a magnifying glass and the difference is just not noticeable. I guess maybe slightly different material? Dimensions are absolutely identical and they feel exactly the same to me.
My steering was very easy before this last o-ring loss. Now it is very stiff, and I think worse after I put the new o-ring in the other day. The book does not have a diagram. I am trying to remember what order I put the spring in. Does anybody have a diagram, or an order to insert the parts?
Ryker Don't know where you are in Sacramento but there is a good Hydraulics shop in Rocklin, CA Also :)
Rocklin Hydraulics.

The spring goes in first, then the relief valve with the o-ring towards the cover and pin
