Title: 6V92 oil temperatures
Post by: Iceni John on September 29, 2018, 05:41:58 PM
Is it normal for the oil to be 15 to 20 degrees hotter than the coolant?   After having installed a transmission fluid remote cooler to reduce its heatload into the engine coolant, I'm now thinking of installing another similar cooler for the oil to also help control coolant temperatures.   Has anyone here done this?   My biggest challenge would be to find a space for this second remote cooler  - all my underbus real estate is now used, and I won't put it next to the radiator, so I'm running out of ideas where it could go!

My 6V92TA DDECIV runs at 185* F and the oil is normally around 205* F on the highway. Perfectly normal. I have two transmission coolers but only the engine oil cooler that they all have.

It would seem completely reasonable for the oil to be hotter than the coolant.

Installing a oil cooling device will reduce the oil pressure. It is normal that the oil gain temprature. The water temperature is controled by a big radiator. The oil is cooled by a small...very small oil cooler. So 200 degres is around normal.

I don't know how it would work on a highway engine with a auto transmission,on the stationery engine like a 750kw generator I sometimes have to change (add)  plates inside the cooler to reach the magic number of 200*F on the 12v92 engines. They run @ 190*-195*F water temp and 200* oil temperature

If an extra oil cooler is in the return line between the filter and engine's heat exchanger, how would it lower oil pressure inside the engine?   Isn't oil pressure determined by the pump's output and all the various clearances inside the engine?   Just wondering.
