You've seen thermal runaway in coach conversion agms, why not in a bus with lots and lots of them or similar battery technology. Didn't this happen to  some cell phones a couple years ago? Wow! Quick thinking driver. Or it had happened before.

I have to believe that there was a battery over temp warning alarm...

You would think that if it had an alarm, allcircuits to and between batteries wouls automatically disconnect, if that would stop a runaway.
