We have been doing some work on updating the interior of the bus. All has gone pretty well. I did some minor changes on the dash and for convenience I removed the steering wheel. I went to put it back on today and could not locate the nut to secure the steering wheel to the steering column. It appears to be a 1 inch nut with 20 threads per inch. Of course this is a holiday weekend so I am kind of locked out from the normal sources and I don't readily have the part number from MCI. On Tuesday everything changes because I can overnight one and have it wednesday and all the big supply houses will also be open BUT on the outside chance I am not thinking of a good source I thought I would ask here if someone has a simple solution. I know that finding the lost nut would be the easiest and I have tried that. Will try it again tomorrow BUT any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Did you look inside the socket you took the nut off with?
Thank you for the idea Geoff
I had it lying on the kitchen counter. Like I said we were doing some updates and it was misplaced BUT no one can figure where we would have put it or why we would have moved it but it is gone -- at least for now -- and will resurface the minute that I have confirmed an order for a new one I am sure. ;-)

It will be in the last place you look.
Ask your grandson...they always know :)
But they don't always tell ...
If all else fails Jefferson Truck, Trailer and Bus is a junkyard in OKC. The number is 405-272-0213
Good luck.
The MCI part number is 11A-2-27, for all the good that will do you... :) Hope you find it OK.

Well I guess I am officially in the market for a steering wheel nut.
We combed the coach from front to back and any misc cubby we could think of.
We then went through the trash with a fine tooth comb (well not really a comb but you get the idea) and checked thoroughly so as not to discard it.
It is still winning at this game of hide and seek.
I guess I will admit defeat and find a source to procure another one.
If anyone has the twin to mine and you are not particularly attached to it you have my attention.

Look for something else you have lost in the recent past. It will usually turn up that way.
In my case that is damn near everything I touch.
It's probably in that "I'll put it here to keep it safe" place. If I ever find that place again I'll have a veritable gold mine of stuff that I put there. Or since you were in the kitchen, look in the refrigerator. I seem to put a lot of things in there that don't belong.
This is the very reason I do very little work on my bus or autos !! I'll have a 10 minute job but it would take me four hours to do it .The other three hours and fifty minute's I spend looking for the tool I was using or looking for some nut or screw that disappears into thin air
Never fails with me when I lose something small the wife always finds it in my pocket when she does my clothes
Vice grips until you find the nut.
Look in the laundry basket it will be in the bottom. ;D
Well Clifford Billie did not find it in my pocket or the laundry. She was kind enough to sort through the trash yesterday and look for it. Yes Bob I was thinking of just drilling a hole and putting in a cotter key to keep the steering wheel on. It is after all spring loaded from below the wheel for the turn signal function. I have now decided that it is best to just locate a new steering wheel nut instead of looking for this one and if I find it I will put it in a very special place so I will always know where it is at.
I want to thank everyone for the help and suggestions.

Get a thread gage and check the number before buying a new nut.
I use a micrometer to measure the diameter and a thread gauge to check the pitch.
A one inch diameter with a 20 per inch thread.
Knowing all that will not make the search any easier BUT it will help to be certain that the nut I get will fit.
Thanks for all the help
Melbo ;-)
Nut heck I want to know how you got the steering wheel off. I tried to take mine off and almost broke my pullers. Nut came off easy. I ended up pulling it out at the joint instead. ;D
Well I have to confess that when I saw the subject line and Mel's name I had all sorts of thoughts like:
- the nut behind the wheel
- the nut holding the wheel
- a loose nut
- a wing nut
But I'm much too classy a guy to have ever posted any of those thoughts so I stayed silent.
the PO gave me the number to Jefferson Truck, Trailer and Bus. He stated that he as received many replacement parts from them. I called them they actually had one windshield and all of the light lenses for my bus. He may be worth a call.
Dave if you do a search of this site there is a thread from 2006 where I describe my method for removing the steering wheel after removing the nut. Because the shaft is hollow I designed a part so my puller would work. If you would like I can post a picture of it. YES Bob I know that you are MUCH too classy to make any untoward comments and I appreciate that. We are still thinking that it would be good to visit you north of the 49th if that is the correct reference. Thank you for being so reserved. Dominic thank you for the info. If I come up empty on my other efforts I may try them. You have to remember the WHOLE COMMERCIAL WORLD wakes up tomorrow morning so I have lots of options. Once again thank you all for the responses. They say a bus conversion is never done BUT with this remodel the inside is as close as I would like and the drive train has been running strong for years now.

good luck :)
IDK if it matters now, but take a magnet with a long handle and run it behind the dash kick plate. That is where mine fell...but I saw it fall.
Good luck.
I ordered one from the place that eagle19952 referenced. I already had them book marked but was hoping I could source one locally. I guess I could if I knew the VIN of a semi truck that uses the same size nut because that is the only way the local truck dealers can find a part. Gotta just love computers and keyboard jockeys.
;-)

The flavored Ezra Brook will do it Mel I am still looking for a extra set of keys 4 years after a few of us finished off the gift you gave me
