Title: I bought a used bus Now What?
Post by: Jerry32 on February 06, 2007, 05:23:26 PM
After reading all the projects going on here I decided I would get  involved myself. Hope I can pic all the brains here once in a while. It'll be the first of march before the weather gets good enough to bring it home ( SC to OR ) as winter is too deep right now.  Jerry

Welcome to the Asylum Jerry!

You'll have many long tales of funto tell soon enough!

Where in SC is the coach located? If you need any help, there are quite a few of us nuts in the area.

Thanks Nick,
I hope to gleen some info from where ever anf find where to go to get the right stuff to make this bus do it's thing. I guess we all have our ideas to roll our own and have a machine that peforms for a long time with out spending all our spare time working on it. I think the whole idea makes a good hobby and a place to direct whatever creative energy we can muster and afford.

No It's not paid for yet but just a deposit until I send the rest of the mooola. Appreciate the help . They say the tires are shot and I need to know if they will make it to ORegon. They claim it runs great but then they are selling. Jerry

Well Shucks! I've got to work on Monday. Maybe I can go over on Saturday morning with a camera.

Jerry, Have you been here to inspect the bus?

You only 5 miles from the airport (GSP) which is 6 miles from me. If you need a ride from the airport, let me know.

As for the tires. . . How long are you planning on the conversion work to take? If over a couple of years, I'd suggest getting some decent takeoffs to make the trip home. (I have tires on my bus that are too old to use safely, but they only have 20k miles on them.)

Now find a Bus Rally to attend.  Spend three days, it will be like a class room.  I spent two days in Arcadia, everyone was GREAT educating me answering every question I had and I had lots of them.

Thanks again to everyone in Florida that showed me in, under and over there coaches.

Hey guys,I havn't inspected the bus and the folks selling it don't sound to knowledgable to me so I would like to find out some things which I don't get any clear answers on from them. I don't know what model transmission or if it has a retarder or jake brake. They claim it runs good but I would like somewone to start it up and air it up and report what it looks like to you. The thing looks like whoever got rid of it took all the good tires and wheels and put on steel wheels and all the worst tires and some paint to sell it. I believe that MCI's had a spare behind the front bumper but I don't  know if this is true so anyway I told them I needed a spare to travel with. I dont want to hazve to buy tires before I get to Oregon as prefer to have local dealer and oregon has no sales tax.Jerry

Are you in this for the adventure?

I might suggest you get  someone from the board to take a look at it for you and give you an evaluation prior to buying an airplane ticket.  There seems to be several guys that I know could provide a good report not too far from the bus

Offer to pay them for thier time. maybe 200.00 for the day????

If it passes that test, find a bus mechanic to evaluate it for you futher........Most definitley before you drive it 3000 miles.

no idea what you are paying for it, but there are buses for sale on the west coast....probably in equal or better shape and for the same price.

seems like alot of effort for a common bus with unknown history.

Also scarey is the fact they don't know anything about it......who knows how they abused it prior to deciding to sell it.

I have been looking for a bus on the west coast but couldn't find one with an 8V92. the only ones I seen were in the east or mid west. Also buying in the west doesn't mean it's not 2000 miles from home. I  think anyone familiar with DD's could start this thing up and get a good idea of good or bad. This is from EB and they have 100% and claim it drives great and runs really well. However I would like a bus person to look at for me too. I've certainly run my share of old equipment and usually take plenty of tools along but can't do it since I will have to fly out to get it. The reason I want an 8V is west coast mountains and also want to convert to UVO WVO and will lose some power that way.   Jerry

Also I wanted a widebody as my present MH is a widebody and I sseen that GM have the crossways engine and eagles have rust problems so went after an MCI.  I have an allegro bus with a cummins engine in it now and no way to put in an extra tank for conversion. The cummins is to weak for the mountains even though I have upgraded the power the cooling system can't keep up.   Jerry
Title: Re: I bought a used bus Now What?
Post by: tekebird on February 07, 2007, 11:22:15 AM
not exactly true on the DD the 6-71 in my 04 prior to a new one being put in ran well, didn't smoke etc.....but when taken out and looked at My DD guy and the mechanic who took it out were supprised it was running so well with the wear it had.....now is that a good thing or a bad thing?  Was running great worn out but was a ticking time bomb in my book.

I understand that isf you buy a bus on the west coast in say LA you stiill have a drive on your hands.

With the seller not knowing about buses what they say about driving well is not worth the time to even say that........I have gone to look at alot of buses and other vehicles that were said to  run and drve great only to find them having serious issues.

Where were you looking for buses and what is your shell budget,

ABC, MAK as well as a bunch of other sales places on the west coast have lots of buses on hand, there are even a few in your neck of the woods.\

I think you will find you will notice little diffwerence in power on the smaller motor......at least not enough to make it a buying issue IMHO

Sure it will be  a bit slower on a grade but that does not really ad up to much lost time on a trip in reality.

Now as a regular Ebay both personal and for business....feedback is important, but you must consider how many feedbacks they have, and also what else they were selling.......

selling and getting 5000 positive feedbacks for selling Roundtuits, does not mean they know about buses or anything else for that matter.  They may not be trying to mislead you but if they don't know buses and are saying it drives and runs great they can't reasonably say that unless they qualify it by saying 'but I really don't know buses"

Ex, I looked at an MC-8 a few years ago......Corporate owned from new ......Pics looked great......But pics are great lyers...even if the photographer is well intentioned.....and that can go both ways, but the thing was not that nice in person, ran great, but smoked badly on a warm day, Had some maint records but they were shoddy and work was done at very oddball places and not by bus people.  In Fact some of the work that was done was obvious........and obviously was starting to fail just a few hthousand miles later.

Again, I would pay one of the guys that lives around there to go give it a run and drive.

If it passes that test arrange to have it inspected in more depth

If it passes then Fly in and pay after you inspect it ( this is better done while it is being prof. inspected.

As far as tools.

Buy what you need after you pick up the bus.....Sears...and take what you don't use back when you get home.

T-Bird I was in your corner when Ace was beating you up in that eagle thread but you are really going over board pissing on this guys parade. He obviously has been looking for a bus before he bought this one and did some shopping and research. And bought this bus because it met his needs. Budget, style, Drive train and so on. And In this bus community I don't think he needs to PAY anybody to go check it out, were bus NUTS we'll drive any where within reason to look at a bus and evaluate it to help out and meet another bus nut. Give the guy a break  ;)  ;D

Jerry,

All I can say is buy what you can afford and HAVE FUN DOING IT!

When I bought mine I had all kinds of dreams to what I wanted and could afford, that was three years ago. I am still plugging along and I ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

It is fun to purchase the coach of your dreams, plan what you want to do with it, make changes along the way and enjoy your coach even if it is not finished.

Anything purchased that is used is bound to wear out, break down and collapse. But that is half the fun, when it breaks, figure it out on how best to fix it.

This is a hobby for most of us BUSNUTS. Enjoy the progress you put into it. HAVE FUN DOING IT!!!!

Happy Trails,

Paul

Ron, I am not pissing on anyones dream.  Just posting my ideas.

I suggested paying, I am not retired so taking off work costs me......if it was around the corner no problem but taking 1/2 day or so I would not offer it up for free Unless I wanted to see it for some reason of my own.

I looked at a 4905 that was a few miles from me a year or so ago for a guy in the midwest...gratis

Now as I said I said to pay.....if you or  someone else turns it down...thats your call.....offering to pay is just polite......if you don't have the money don't offer but Everyones time is worth something in my book...if they choose not to accept payment becasue they are a freind, want to help out etc.....thats fine.

Jerry sent me the link to this bus. And I told him he likely won't find another 102 as cheap as that one.

it clearly needs tires as stated in the description.  has some sort of goop on all the roof seams, 600k on the odo, at least a second owner bus

seller is a used RV dealer  with great feedback, but as Jerry said they don't know buses.

having sold and brokered a few buses in my day ( for profit), I have discussed with prospective buyers the cost of converting and maintaining a bus (even ones with known histories)and have had more people walk away........and I feel good about not taking thier money

Jerry has an Alegro Bus motorhome which are nice, although as we all know are not really buses, does he really want to go from Nice Alegro to beat up MCI?  Does he really think that his fully converted WVO powered Bus is going to perform better in the big grades of the west coast?

he is wanting to convert to WVO at the known cost of loss of performance.

he is likely buying a bus with 600k onthe engine and trans.

Is he looking for a project?  If So great, I have seen antique cars that were total losses in my book and someone restored them because that was thier hobby.....with no accounting for the time invested.

I am no Prevost owner 4104 that has been in the family since 1978, MC-8 that I have had for two years, my Dad has a 4108 and is in the process of buying another one.

My Dad has bought two flxliners restoring one and selling at a loss, and bought and restored the MACK MV-620 prototype.....so I know busnuts.

But I also know the atrition rate, and the number of people that get in over thier head.....or uninformed.

I feel good about my warnings as warnings are meant to inform......

and that is indeed what his initial post was asking for, information on a bus that is 300 miles from him with no history and sellers who don't know buses.

IGNORANCE is not Bliss.

I think Kyle is 6 miles from the bus.......get over there and inspect it for the man.

Most of us get in over our heads, I did (twice) but most of us can swim and if we're week swimmers and need help there's plenty of lifeguards on here and close by. JJ helped me wire the other bus actually I helped him. Others have came around when I was near by just out of curiosity. And I've visited others. Most of us have already made up our minds when we ask for advice or opinions on here and looking for a little support.

won on ebay, yet to be paid for , at least earlier in this thread.

I guess just color me conservative.......I know a huge oxymoron.

Although I have purchased cars off ebay none were paid for prior to me showing up in person, and I have bid on many a bus on ebay, bidding conservatively considering what may be wrong.

My MC-8 was an ebay bus although I purchased it off of ebay.......called the guys talked for about an hour to figure out he knew what he was talking about and was not full of used car salesman $#!%.  Drove down to NC from PA looked at and drove the bus....said I had to think about it.......talked it over on the way home......called the guy the next day said I would take it but it might be a few weeks until I could coordinate to get down and pick it up........he said he would deliver it for me on his dime that weekend.

I know this is a rare example....

I am not doubting anyones willingness to help a guy out....but if he is on a budget there are expensive contigencies to at least consider.  There is stuff that can break in the middle of BFE Utah or kansas that the parts alone could run him into some pretty hefty bills.

Again, before I would pay I would have someone that is reputable look at run and drive the beast.

then prior to paying would have it at a DD Dealer and over a Pit.

Jerry,

Good luck on this bus.

No one wants to discourage you, just save you the pitfalls that us or others have been through.

When I bought my bus my eyes looked like this   :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Next bus like this  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

I have enjoyed every moment I have worked on my bus, that said, I would not have bought this bus with

what I know now.   My heart overlooked things that took many (100's) hours to fix and make right.  Its a

sweet running machine now, and I wouldn't trade it, but, I learned a lesson.

These are expensive toys, especially to fix, I would not hesitate to get someone to at least look at it

before I flew out.

Good luck in your search

Hi Dallas, yep, that "321" comment was directed at Uncle Ned (Do you have Ned's phone number?).   I figured you'll go straight over from Florence.  What you doing on Monday?  I'll buy you lunch!  I owe you a couple meals anyway!  Also owe you a few adult bevs?
Believe I owe NCBob a couple too.
You still got the same phone numbers?  I tried both and got Cat's cell phone but no answer.  Said she was on the phone.
I'll try again tomorrow.   I don't have any problem having a look at Jerry's bus.
Nothing going on up here at all.  Was nice today, but lately it ain't been fit to go outside.
Glad I don't live up there in Minnesquito...Craig must be loving the H*# out of that weather.  Butch seems to be enjoying himself in the negative temps in Indiana.
Anyway, let me know if your free.  I'll see if Neds available for this Monday or next?
Maybe they'll be passing out samples at the Beemer plant~!
Maybe the owner will take us for a ride in J's 102.  Then we could really offer some advice.  I have some advice already.
Jerry, plan on some new tires before lighting out across the county.  The bus probably has 12 or 13R-22.5 tires and they are generally expensive on the road.  You may be able to buy a set for the cost of a couple highway replacements.
I believe you asked if a spare would go behind the front bumper...the answer is yes...but, consider the bays for spare tires since they will be empty or mostly empty.  Much easier to access from a bay.  I've got a steel spare and I place it in the spare tire compartment with a loader.  It's a heavy beast.  BTW, there has been some discussion about fit of a 13R in an MCI spare tire compartment...it will go with room to spare...FWIW.

Best,  JR

Now where's Huggy Bear?
I've got Ned's address in my laptop...the one T took to work today for a PP presentation...and came back without the power supply. The battery will get it going, but it won't last more than a few minutes...need a new battery.  May need a new power supply too.  Bummer!

Hey what about me!!!  I wanna go!!!!!  I'll take the digital video cam too!  Please!!!

Let'me know when you go kyle and when ya'll come down too, you can park your bus in the yard or driveway! Sat would be better for me. Nuthin like a trip to Sugar Tit!!  well your almost there anyway.

I looked at an 8 from that rvsforless fellow before i bought my 9, he was nice and the 8 was nice but a little too rusty for my liking.  There is an rv parts/service place next door to him.  an DD/alison place is close by (you'll pass it) and international truck place an exit up past the airport, and 101 is near the airport too, and T/A up one more exit past 101 with scales and used to have a place close by that polished stainless(not sure if it's still there).

If you would like to pay some one for a report, call Juan at Deltaways and he used to do such and is known around here for 2-strokes amongst bus people.  Also Johnny or Robby (brothers) over at Jeanes Bus and they might help you out.

How bout posting a link and/or  pics?

Hey Jon, (I wus gonna call U, honest!)
I'm planning on doin' a look-see on Sat after lunch since the lot is open 11am to 4pm on Sat & 9:30 to 6:30 weekdays.

I'll post what I find out & maybe a picture too!

Then you smart guys from out of town can come by & find all the stuff I missed  ;D

kyle4501

BTW, since Jerry lives a little west of here, wouldn't it make better sense for him to buy tires at a place that can service his after the sale needs a little closer to OR.

I have to work (While some of my buses may have been free, ain't none of 'em cheap!) on Monday. One of mine is in Lyman, the other 3 are near Columbia.

I think I would worry about belts and hoses more than tires.  Good morning to whoever might be around. Another great day in Yuma at 65 deg this am and going to the high 70's.

Hey Jon!
At least you could leave us the side impact test and the frontend collision test!
I wanna see how well it does when your trying to pull the engine with a forklift and you've had a few cool adult beverages and your kinda goin' too fast and not aimed very well.
this is all in the interest of inspection and safety, you know!

By the way, did the exhaust drag when you were doin' wheelies, or did they come off later when you were jumping curbs?

We'll be expecting you for lunch! Your treat!

Jon & I met another bus nut at the sales lot to look at Jerry's bus. Sorry Jerry, but you need to cut your losses & abandon this lost cause. Don't waste any $$ on a plane ticket. To help you out, I'll take care of disposing of this vehicle for you for a very small fee. LOL Seriously though, the main thing wrong with this bus is that I didn't find it first!

The engine didn't smoke like you thought a DD 2-stroke should when started in 40 F. Just a little black smoke & that was it! Jon drove it & said that he was afraid of the power. I was following & he didn't poke around.

Took some time to air up though, rose to 70 psi & sat there a while before it went to 120psi. The fast isle didn't work till the pressure went above 70.

Minimal rust, the only place that looked like it needed attention was above the blowers.

No curb rash either! The body was very straight.

Only air leak I heard was at the rear wheels when brakes were applied.

It currently has several empty gallon jugs of 15w-40 in the bay. That needs to be corrected.

It had a coolant leak that looks to be an easy fix. The interior was in good shape too!

Over all, an awesome bus for the dough. Way to go Jerry! I think I'll let you pick out my next one  ;D

The people at the sales lot were GREAT! No perssure & wanted to make sure they hadn't missed anything.

Jerry, keep us posted when you come to get her. . .

I'm glad to hear that it might be a good buy. I knew what I wanted and hoped that it would turn out good. I know I'll not put a lot of miles on it but hopefully minor repairs will keep it up. Sure appreciate you giving it a look. I suppose the sales lot might have put the  oil in it and didn't know the right oil. I'd like to know what the engine is set up for in HP but guess I can figure that out as time goes by. I now need to find manual for it and will have to have some SS simulators to cover up the steel wheels. Didn't find out the tire size but probably 22.5's . Have to get rid of the charter outfits name etc. I'll have a million questions about conversion the first is where do you get rid of the seats. Maybe someone want some for a home theatre.    Jerry

When you want to post a picture do you see on the bottom left of the screen, ADDITIONAL OPTIONS? Click on that and you should be able to where it says ATTACH.

Hope this helps.

For those visiting our little town, the BMW plant is a neat place to tour

http://www.bmwzentrum.com/information/tour_times.asp

If you don't take the plant tour, the Zentrum museum was worthwhile to see.

Jerry, according to Lonnie (the salesman), the local DD place said the motor was 'turned up to almost max HP'. So for a mechanical 8V92T wouldn't that be 475hp?

Kyle,    Lonnie didn't tell me that but glad to hear it and yes usually they can run up to 475 HP and in industrial use up to 600 HP. I guess you and jon thought it had enough power. Dallas , you can send me an e mail . (see profile)  The first thing on the agenda is getting the bus home and selling the Allegro bus RV I now have. Guess I will put it on ebay or consign to a local lot at home. Of course I got to get it home too as I have been Yuma all winter from Nov 1. 1200 miles home over the high desert of nevada. I will be leaving on 2-22 and shud make it by 2-24. During the trip I run out of cell service through most of nevada and of course when I take down the starband dish I won't have internet till I set it up at home.  I have 40 foot garage at home so will have to add a couple of feet to get that bus in plusd it  holds a couple of other vehicles too. I also have a shop with one garage bay on my 2.5 acres in the desrt of Oregon.    Jerry

Jerry,

I was looking on the video and the right front was a 22.5, --it was hard to tell on the other tires while we were doing those 8o ft donuts ;D :D

Email me your mailing adress and i'll stick the video on a cd and send it.

Maybe you could drive the allegro out and lonnie could consign it or there's also the nations largest RV auction down the street from him.

Gotta run

I think the airline ticket would be cheaper than the fuel to get the MH there. The cost of fuel to get the MCI home is gonna be big too at I guess 6 mpg. May have to take out a bigger morgtage on my place.

My guess would be about $2K for fuel to Oregon.  An 8V92 that is driven with a heavy foot can get down into the 4 MPG range.  It may see 6 MPG if driven conservatively.    Screaming up those hills has its costs.  ;)
Jon or Kyle, where is the bus located relative to the Beemer plant and I-85?  I googled the address and came up with a location north of Greer?  Sat image shows a farmhouse on the site??
I may have used an incorrect address.
See everyone tomorrow...plan to pick up Uncle Ned about 10 and we'll be right down.  Not that far to drive.    JR

Well, Guys, it doesn't look like I'm gonna make it.

The manager and Cat got into an argument the other night and he's threatening to have the bus towed. I need to stay here and shoot the old coarse type file if he tries it.

Dammm, I love stress!

Bummer  :(      Hope you get things worked out.   Sounds like time is near to get the old bus fired up and exercised.
Highly unlikely that the campground will remain as it is once sold.
New owners may be rather oddly abrasive too.
Best, JR

JR,  coming south on 85  you'll want to take HWY 101 exit 60 on mapquest and turn left to go to the bus and turn right to go to BMW it'll be the next left and there is bus parking.

to go to the bus, go back across the bridge and get and you'll pass the detroit dieselalison place on the left and keep going bout a mile or so then you'll see the RichardsRV on the left and RVforless will be the next place, you'll see the rv's.

If you see the 80 ft donut we left you've gone to far, but if they let you drive it then try it, it's a blast in someone elses bus. :D ;)  ok that's enuff teasing jerry, i'll stop ::)

Thanks for the info Jon.  I'll find it now.  I put the address into Google maps and it placed the bus up north of Greer.  Somehow that didn't seem quite right.  Glad it's not!
Doubt that I'll drive the bus.  May start it.  Ya'll have already ruled out driving issues.  Just peek around and see what we see... ::)
Too bad Dallas won't be able to make the trip...he's a good Detroit dude.  I'll post my impressions tomorrow evening.
Are we gonna see you tomorrow?  Gotta eat somewhere!
We'll be up there around 11 or 12.
Thanks again, JR

What NewbeeMC9 said.

Jon, you need to stop stretching the truth. You weren't able to finish the donut! Besides, it looked to me it was going to be a 70 ft donut if that ditch hadn't stopped the bus so abruptly. They got it out this morning & I'll bet Jr won't be able to tell.
LOL

Well, had a very nice day for surveying a bus today.
Jerry's bus has a lot of potential, I'd like to have it.   Gonna take a good bit of TLC to make nice, but as Kyle said, the sides are straight, no curbs in bay floors or doors.   Doesn't appear to be beat up...but the bus has been unloved for a while.  :'(
Going to need tires before I'd drive it....anywhere.  The previous owner apparently scrounged up whatever wheel and tire assemblies they could find to get what was probably good rubber off the bus.
Biggest problem noted was major rust issue above the blower compartment.   That's gonna have to be fixed.   Big holes into the rear cap floor area.  May leak enough air to cause heating problems.
The rear cap will have to be removed and the steel that forms the lower floor and outer perimeter of the upper blower blower box will to be replaced.  Good time for an R&M cap (good time for some of them shiney "Budd-lite" or Alcoa wheels too).  Jerry lives right near R&M too.  No huge shipping costs!
The HVAC filter door is open, don't know if the filter is still in place, but the door should be closed up before driving the bus.  Pull in battery gasses thru the heater from that compartment.  The underside of the bus, including the battery compartment is in good condition.
The temp guage shows 150*...max.  May be missing thermostats, or guage or sender doesn't work...or all of the above.
Tires, brakes, belt, general service, and it oughta make it back to the Left Coast without too much issue.
No jakes or retarder.
8V92TA MUI should be a rocket on the highway.   Trans is HT740.
Met up with Jon at the RV dealership and we had a great lunch!  :)
Jerry, I wish you success with your bus.
Best, JR

BTW, Jon or Kyle, if one of ya'll are back over near the bus, would you look at the hubs and see what type lugs it has?   Flange nuts or acorns?  Or some combo of both.  Wondering if the bus has hub or stud piloted wheels.  If it has Budd style lugs on the drive axle it's a stud piloted wheel.  Jerry may want this info and I was derelict in not looking!

The inside drive tires looked OK. I'll bet someone took alcoas off & put on junk to hold it off the ground.

That is a great point JR about the wheels, but I'd go one step further. I'd have a good tire service center look at it as the tire swapping dude may not have had the correct nuts & used whatever he had. He may also have put the wrong rims on too.

Sorry 'bout missing lunch . . .
