Title: Starting issue.
Post by: ReturningToAlaska on May 23, 2018, 02:01:03 PM
On my trip, my bus started not wanting to start by the push button. I get the feeling that it is due to a short somewhere in the system.

It acts like it is in gear, so the engine will not start by the button. I have taken to jumpering the starter, the it will run fine. There was a couple of times when it would slightly click the starter, like a loose connection. But also as part of this issue, connected I am pretty certain, is that the fast idle switch. It will most of the time never go into fast idle. Sometimes it will pulse it, sometimes when it does go into fast idle, my rearview camera screen will flicker like something is shorting electrically.

I tried looking over the wiring diagrams I have, but didn't have a good idea where to begin looking for the problem area.

Was thinking about poking around in the rear junction box, and may do that when I come get my bus from an unrelated breakdown, that left it stranded in South Dakota. (Radiator sprung a MAJOR leak)

Sounds more like a bad ground on the instrument panel to me.

Rear start switch in the engine compartment will not start it either though.

Possibly a faulty neutral switch or starter relay? Does that have a tripple function device?

Neutral switch.

No start, no fast idle, thinks it is in gear.

Check both the switch and associated sketchy wiring.

Happy coaching!

Possibly a bad fuel pressure switch. Jumper it to ground and see if that fixes the problem with rear start. They are notorious for going bad and will prevent the starter solenoid from engaging.

If it was slightly clicking, though, it's probably not this, but more likely a corroded connection somewhere.

Check connections on the starter for tightness and make sure terminals are clean.
