Title: Wet sanding Alcoa Rims
Post by: PP on May 10, 2018, 06:40:38 PM
When I replaced my tires the last time, I moved the inside dually to the tag since they looked like they were in really good shape yet (no weather checking). However, the rims were really rough from being snugged up against the outside dually and since I was doing the tires myself and hauling them in pairs to the tire shop to have the new ones mounted, I left them on their original rims. I tried polishing them with Mother's a few years back, and then again last year but tried a different metal polish called Blue. Nothing really did much for them so this last week I spent a lot of time wet sanding them, starting with 220 grit and working my way up to rubbing compound until they looked like soft aluminum with no blemishes. Then I put on a coat of Blue metal polish and wala! They look like new rims. If you have a problem with stubborn water spots on your windows, the Blue metal polish works great on them too, just don't use it on mirrors-leaves them cloudy. >:(

It is great to see these ladies working so hard making the rims look great again but I wonder how long it will be before these ladies have issues with all that polishing compound being absorbed into the skin and then into their system. One looks pretty black on face, legs and arms plus what ever they may breathe in.

I agree. They really should be wearing particle masks if nothing else.

She's been working there for years and years. Everyone knows and loves her. I can't remember her nickname but she does smoke a lot and I can promise you that will kill her before the polish splatter does. It's not airborne guys, it's liquid splatter and it gets everywhere. A mild mild abrasive. Probably not going to kill her.

She'll be ok. The tar and nicotine coats the lungs so that stuff can' t be absorbed.
