Title: Transmission oil fill
Post by: richard5933 on May 10, 2018, 02:39:39 PM
Simple question, but I cannot find the answer anywhere in my manual...

I've got a 4-speed attached to the 8V71 in our 4108a. What's the proper procedure for checking the oil level in the transmission? Warm vs. cold? Engine running or off? Etc. Etc.

All that the manual says really is use engine oil to fill it.

Thanks.

Pull the stick and read it,, cold or hot won't make much difference.. You have a pump attached to the engine that circulates the trans oil thru a filter then on to the trans and back again..>>>Dan

I know nothing about your GM bus, but a manual transmission is usually filled to the fill hole, cold, not running. Some have a dip stick. Same procedure.

Not running, cold, fill to max, wait a short bit and re-check the level.

When reinstalling trans after rebuild, manual states to fill to " oil level" mark on dipstick. No mention of warming transmission first. Recheck after running a mi ute or two to purge any air from pump syster. On yours, just maintain at oil level mark cold.
