Title: 82 PREVOST
Post by: Hosefly on February 05, 2007, 06:33:43 PM
I have a slow leak in my driver side air bag looks like their a 4 up front. The coach will leak down only in front after bus is shut down overnight and the back will leak down the next night. Will I need to replace the 1 airbag thats leaking or will I need to replace all. Do all coaches with air bags leak down when not in used or should they hold their position. How hard are airbags to replaced and how much can I expect to pay. Also I going to replaced the muffler on the Detroit V71 can someone tell what a fair price would be to do this.  THANKS-------HOSEFLY

This is the reason we all should have our location on our profile. We may be close enough to help. As far as changing air bags on my GMC and MCI they were fairly simple jobs with the right tools. Not familiar with Prevost. Every thing you mentioned should be relatively simple jobs for the mechanically inclined. If I were replacing air bags as I did on my MCI this summer I would at least change all of them at the wheel I had off. There not that expensive. Keep the best ones for emergency use in the future.

I wouldn't replace anything until you isolate the airbags and confirm that they are the problem.  Leveling valves are a common issue with airbag leaks.
The airbags may be leaking...no doubt.
If you're on a budget, and you verify that an airbag is leaking, you could replace just the one that is leaking.   You'll probably be doing the others soon enough.
When I replaced mine...I ordered 4 new drive axle airbags, and found 3 good airbags and one very bad bag.  I replaced them all, but someone (New Jersey Transit) had already replaced 3 of the 4.   A year earlier I replaced the front airbags.  But potential other problems were ruled out before I replaced them.    Also found a bad leveling valve on the front.
Before you drop the bus off at a shop, get an estimate...then you'll have some idea what the rest of the story will be.
I'd assume a cost of approx $150 each for the airbags.  Prevost may be more?
Installation is what will cost.  Maybe.  If you have a place to work, this is doable...if you know how to jack and safely block the bus.  The bus should be on a solid concrete slab to safely jack and block.
Good Luck, JR

I agree JR... MY 82 Prevost leaks down in a day and it's the leveling values that leak the air. I'm waiting for a leveling kit from Pete Papas ... that will get rid of that problem
