I need to have my engine looked at and more than likely rebuilt, we live in North Idaho and asking you fellow bus folks for recommendations as where we could find a reputable shop not to far away to work on our 71 fishbowl 8V-71. Thank you for your help.
They are not that hard to rebuild. Have you considered rebuilding it yourself? I am too far away to help but I have done several over the years.
I have not considered that, right now I have so many projects to do im looking for a shop to do it.
Hillsboro Diesel in Hillsboro OR would be my choice maybe 300 or 400 miles from you
Like my AMGeneral, you're fishbowl's engine & transmission is on a cradle. Takes about 2 hours to get the entire assembly out-once out is much easier to overhaul the engine. Cliff's suggestion is a good one. Maybe consider turboing the engine now. Good Luck, TomC
Would a turbo help with hills?
Thank you Cliff I'll call them. About an eight hour trip away.
I've had a pretty good relationship with the Interstate location here in Wisconsin, and I believe that they have a location in Billings, Montana. Doesn't seem too far away from Idaho. I believe that Interstate is a DD dealer, and from what I've seen here in Wisconsin they have techs familiar with buses and two strokes.
There is a great video log of the Technomadia folks getting the 8V71 in their 4106 rebuilt while they camped in the Interstate parking lot for a while. Might be worth a call.

I assume you are prepared for the cost to do a rebuild on your engine?
Thinking around 20,000?
Hillsboro will be under 20 and Interstate will be well over 20 grand, you can probably save more if you are not in hurry by letting Hillsboro do it on a fill in when they are not over run with work
Ok, sounds like Hillsboro is the choice, thanks for the tip.
N65 injectors will get you 308hp and 800lb/ft torque with horsepower reduction as you go up in altitude. My engine with 7G75 injectors, air to air intercooling, bypass blower gets 375hp and 1125lb/ft torque. Nearly 30% more pulling power. If you rebuild your engine to turbo specs with lower compression 2 piece pistons, with 7G80 injectors you can get 400hp and 1200lb/ft torque. And believe me, the performance is truly different, but fuel mileage is about the same. Good Luck, TomC

but the $$'s double.
and heat issues.
how I did it was I paid a mechanic helper $ 40 per hour to help me remove and reinstall it in the coach
it only took 2 hours to remove once I had the bumper off and other stuff out of the way and 3 hrs to put it back in and get it running
I sent the engine on a skid by way of trucking co that had a tail gate lift to put in in the truck cost was $ 500 each way
sent it to LEIDS DIESEL 267 Green Hill Rd, Newville, PA 17241, USA
Phone: +1 717-776-7725
cost to do total rebuild was $ 10,000 no tax ( out of state ) mine was a 6v92ta
this is a family business and do a great job and this is what they do every day is they work on DD 2 stroke diesels
this was in 2010 and I live in Huntsville Ontario Canada
they do not have a web site as they are horse and buggy type people
so I would give them a call for a real quote and then you will have a base line to go on
it only took 3.5 weeks from the time we put the engine on the truck to the time we unloaded it off the truck
any questions just ask
Dave
I doubt you will get that price now Dave the parts from DD have gone up 30 to 50% since 2010.I just finished a a 8v92 in Texas there was only 1 new DD crank in the US available they wanted $4800.00 for the crank and $1400.00 for 1 cam.Forget about new heads there are none available only recons that have been welded, the machine shop charged me $1500.00 to line bore the block those old engines are not cheap to rebuild now lol when I started they were average $100.00 a cylinder that was parts and labor that was a long time ago
Leids is the place to go for me also. They do great work at reasonable labor rates. They do an incredible amount of stationary power plant engine rebuilds, most of which are DD two strokes. There is frequently a bus conversion there for engine repair rebuild. They rebuilt our 4104 and turbocharged it several years ago. In the vicinity of Carlisle, Pa.
so if the price to do a rebuild is up so must the price on our old bus r/s
my 1990 must be worth millions now :D
for the cost of a phone call I would ask .... how much to rebuild it
Dave
Tim,
American Fleet in Springfield Missouri can also give you a quote. We only build Detroit engines, mainly for the bus industry. Once we receive customers cores, they are typically back in their hands within 10 days. We only use genuine parts and each engine is dyno tested prior to shipping. If you need any references, please let me know.
My coach has an American Fleet rebuild with 4k miles. I sleep fine at night knowing it's good for a long time. A 100K mile warranty means they stand behind their work.
Although I dont have direct experience with American, I highly recommend them from word of mouth experience. Do it right and be done with it.
