Title: Anyone use the Horton 9 blade ccw fan on their 8V71? Pros/cons?
Post by: Tnr555 on April 12, 2018, 10:47:53 AM
We just had or stock radiator re-cored.  The stock metal fan is chewed up and we are thinking to change to a plastic 9 blade, left hand rotation.  Any advice, thoughts, ideas?

as long as it doesnt suck the fins and tubes through the blades, go for it. After installtion, carefully check that it pulls enough air flow, compared to original.Pitch of blades counts as much as number of them. I would think that new blade designs should be more efficient than the old ones, and not just lighter.

The Horton tech people should be consulted.

This is their bread and butter.

No guessing, get on the phone and ask 'em!

Happy coaching!

You are better off with Kit Master than Horton www.kit-masters.com (http://www.kit-masters.com)  (800) 810-9110

I had Multi-Wing make my new fan.   It's a 26" 9-blade with individually-replaceable blades that can be readjusted to different pitch angles, not that I've done so or should ever need to.   It is a CW-rotation fan, i.e driven by a CCW-rotation fan motor, the opposite direction than my bus's original fan and motor.   It takes much less power to drive it compared to the original heavy 6-blade fan that looked like it came out of a prewar Ukrainian farm tractor, it's much quieter (it doesn't beat the air into submission like the old one did), and most importantly it moves much more air.   At high idle, about 800 RPM fan speed, it sucks a rag firmly onto the radiator, so I can't imagine what it's like at full fan speed of about 1700 RPM!   It wasn't cheap, but I feel it's a worthwhile upgrade  -  every little bit helps when trying to cool these 2-strokes.

I have a Kit Masters 9 blade CCW fan on my 8/V71 in a 4106 Gm bus. My old fan looked like a propeller from a B-71 that belly landed. The new fan is plastic of some kind and weighs less than 7 lbs. I purposely ordered a fan with a too small pilot hole so I could cut the pilot myself for a tight fit. I also cut the holes for the bolts that attach it to the fan hub. The blades had to be trimmed to miss the exhaust and the center had to be trimmed to miss the fan drive casting on the engine.  I have one uneventful trip to Indiana after installing the new fan and it worked great. The original fan is heavy, like power robbing heavy. I did the research myself through Kit Masters and got it through Fleet Pride and it cost $320 with shipping. Tried to post some pics but they would not take so if you want some pics email me at   racerracer@buckeye-express.com   put "8V/71 fan" on the subject line.
