I used to live on Long Island in Lakeview (West Hempstead). The parkway is just for cars only, and there have been many accidents like this over the years where someone not from the area gets in trouble. I would have assumed by now that appropriate signs would have been posted at every on-ramp by now. Those curved stone bridges are very tough and unforgiving.

I expect this will be completely GPS routing related.

Before the %^&$% GPS, you spotted the "no go here, big boy" signs, as you were scanning for the names and direction signs.

With "sweetheart" talking you thru it, the driver does not scan for signage, he scans for roadways matching the pattern on the GPS screen.

heads up, busnuts, watch the world in front of you, it can just as easily be one of us.

happy coaching!

It can happen to any of us that are not from that area.  About 10 years ago I was delivering a small class A coach for a dealer, came across the George Washington in heavy traffic and before I knew where I was my GPS had me on a Park Way.  When I saw the first overpass I went to the left lane and got through it without taking the top off.  Next problem exit is just beyond the overpass and traffic would not let me get over in time to get off.  Only thing to do is keep going, stayed in left lane and went under two mote overpasses before the traffic let me move over fast enough to get off the exit.
Been there done that, hope never again.

The vicious traffic in New York City/Long Island is one of the reasons I moved out of there. To get over to the lane you want you have to move over regardless of who is there, and blow your horn a lot. If they think you are not bluffing, they might let you in. Some trucking companies advertise "no New York City deliveries" in order to entice new drivers.

That's one of the best reasons they built I-81 -- 84.  And I'm always glad they did.
