Title: MCI Factory Skylights
Post by: PNWorBUST72 on February 19, 2018, 01:49:01 PM
I saw what I THINK was an MCI bus that had 8 "skylights" installed at the top edge or the roof, starting up the side and arching over to the top, are those factory in some years/models?

Are they good or bad?

Can they be purchased new anymore?

They were an option. Some were used for sightseeing. My other 4905 has these curved roof windows, mostly full length. Coach was built different. Has a significant hollow beam full length of food going down center. The roof lights are lexan, and there is a 3 foot side strip of aluminum full length, covering half of width of windows. Don't know if it is because of leaks or rider complaints of roasting in the sun. Bus was originally from Short Line in New Jersey. Only had 322,000 miles on it.

You will find that the skylights will eat the heck out of air conditioning. Plan for that.

Skylights are also a maintenance item.

They needed chasing after in fleet life to stay ahead of the leaks.

Non-scientific observation, seemed one saw more GM fishbowls with skylights than MCI. Other than select mountain view markets, rare to see an MCI with skylights?

Happy coaching!

Was an option on 1950s through 70s MCIs. They were glass. Can be hard to keep leak proof. Very hot in summer sun
